A potentially dangerous situation was averted in Isla Vista on Sunday morning when a fire broke out in the laundry room of a two-story apartment complex.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded promptly to the emergency call at 10:46 a.m. in the 6700 block of Abrego Road, ensuring limited damage and no injuries.
According to fire department officials, the blaze originated from one of the clothes dryers in the commonly used laundry facility of the complex. The quick response by the firefighters ensured that the fire was “promptly knocked down,” preventing the fire from spreading beyond the laundry room.
Despite the swift containment, one clothes dryer was reported destroyed, and the laundry room sustained minor damages.
Officials confirmed that there was no extension of the fire to adjacent areas and no residents were harmed.
Residents of the apartment complex were briefly evacuated but have since been able to return to their apartments. Fire safety officials remained on the scene to complete a thorough inspection and to provide safety advice to residents and property management.
The incident is under investigation.
Please update with the cause when known. In my complex, many dryers have lint spilling out and I have heard that not cleaning the vent from the lint catcher to the wall is why this happens and can be dangers. Enquiring minds want to know.
rural – It’s my understanding some lint can also be caught in the vent hose even if the lint filter is cleared, especially if the hose is not cleared after an extended period of time.
Someone’s clothes probably do not look very good now. 🙁
