Firefighters and Pilots Honored for Heroic Efforts

Several Santa Barbara County Firefighters and Santa Barbara County Helicopter Pilots were recognized for their heroic efforts during the Whittier Fire last July, and debris flows that struck Montecito in January. 

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department hosted a Valor ceremony at county fire headquarters, where Fire Chief Eric Peterson presented two certificates of valor and seven medals of valor to nine individuals who served beyond the line of duty during these events. SBSO Helicopter Pilot, George DeLuca, was awarded a Medal of Valor for his service and life-saving efforts during the 1/9 debris flow.

  1. These first responders had literally put their necks on the line. To say they are just following “much more deserving” people from the past is a crude statement. This is not a case of just liking to “pat each other on the back.”
