An urgent 911 call from an overnight security worker got a rapid response to a structure fire early this morning on the landmark Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara.

Engines were rolling about 12:30 a.m. when flames were spotted between two of the boards.

The area was in the valet parking lot just passed the Harbor Restaurant.

The Santa Barbara City Fire Department says it was on the scene in minutes and doused the fire.   Then firefighters used tools to dig into the wood and make sure no lingering embers existed.

Vegetation fire-- shortly after 2pm today on a ranch near Buellton. CHP website: 2:10 PM --FIRE IS 97. 2:10 PM --1/2 MI JEO FREEWAY ON BUELL RANCH//NEG 1125. 2:04 PM --BRUSH FIRE IN THE AREA. 2:04 PM --SMOKE SEEN.

This update by the Palm is not for the fire reported here as below the whale painting and at 220 Stearns Wharf. The update is for the valet parking lot just past the Harbor Restaurant which is nowhere near the whale painting so it would have to be the first one which was 12:30 in the morning or even the second of 3 that Roger alluded to. If 3 in one day ...a lot of careless smokers?

love that we are now going down this road of blaming a smoker for this. when there is NO documentation of statements saying it was a cig that started this. There are lots of things that can cause fires, even the pilings themselves can ignite as they are soaked in tar and pitch. but anyways, im just here to stir the pot..... carry on

Uh last time the wharf had a huge fire the cause was faulty electrical wiring.

PSTARSR—I think the fire was caused by texting, since that gets blamed for everything else. Someone was texting way too fast, the phone started to smoke, then burst into flames, and the texter dropped it onto the wooden wharf. Texting is bad. Don't text. Especially on a flammable pier.

The beginning of the problem is signage, there is very very little and what there is, you have to want to find it. Smokers don't look for the signs. We need to put signs that not just say "No Smoking", but should say... "No Smoking In Santa Barbara". Im not talking about 'yuge' but they should have more than the little and the few they have.

The signs should say "No Smoking on the Wharf" and have the muni code number along with fine info as well as possible jail time especially if the wharf catches on fire.

Our city council at work passing more ordinances that they cannot enforce. Smokers walk by my office every day right in front of police officers who do nothing. Is city hall just passing these ordinances to justify their existence?

Sick of the cops not enforcing the no smoking ban! They are only interested in DUIs or things that bring money into the city. How about enforcing the law?

I see people smoking as they walk around downtown, and I wonder if I should nicely mention that it is not allowed. But I'm chicken. Also, while a nuisance, it's not terribly dangerous on the sidewalks downtown. But still. Are there signs downtown? I haven't noticed. I send my thanks to the keen eyes that caught these wharf fires early.

Just use your powers of citizen's arrest. Whenever you see a smoker put him/her in a headlock and call 911. Would love to see Edhat comments when Roger posts THAT one.

Need more space between the deck boards so cigarettes can fall through. A two-inch gap should do it. Spacing that will frighten small children and old folks.

REALLY, their should be no smoking allowed period, especially on wharfs , piers . Come on Santa Barbara keep up. We have had to many fires already.

The funny thing is, first time it burned, amazed! Second time it burned in exactly the same place on the pier, and a co-worker had commented that while she was running on the pier the day before the 2nd fire, she was amazed to see a large contingent of "suits" assessing Moby Dicks. Hmmmmmm. Makes you wonder.... and now, a third fire in front of Moby Dicks! I think that fire insurance pays for otherwise costly upgrades when rebuilding is in order after a fire. Is this the case here? Couldn't say. But makes one wonder!

I'd have to think the major problem out there is after 1 and 1/2 years of the smoking ban there is still a trash can with an ash tray on top just to the right of the entrance, with yes a fire extinguisher next to it and no "No Smoking " signs anywhere . I've yet to see SB's finest give any Japanese tourist even a warning anywhere downtown. They are the heaviest smokers after Eastern Europeans. Feel good laws are pretty worthless when never enforced , just like texting and driving and lights on when driving when it is raining.

I agree completely. There should be no smoking signs everywhere all over SB. As it is, the law is completely useless and never enforced.

Its the Chinese that are the heaviest cigarette smokers per capita. Regardless of where they're from, if they're gonna discreet smoke they should know to put it out thoroughly (not hard to do) before placing it in a disposal bin.

I have been told there was a small fire with flames on the wharf at 12:am...This morning so this was possibly the 3rd incident.

No smoking law in the city so everyone goes to the most flammable place in town and lights up anyway..I guess when the wharf burns down again the tourist folks will have to do another promotional video...
