Film: That Click

90 minutes

That Click is a documentary following the life and work of iconic photographer Douglas Kirkland who captured photos of famous stars from Marilyn Monroe to Nicole Kidman.

Kirkland started his career working for photographer Irving Penn before joining the staff of “Look” magazine and “Life” magazine in the 1960s and 1970s. He captured many of the cover photos of celebrities and actors of the time including Judy Garland and Elizabeth Taylor. The film follows his career through the decades as well as his collaboration and long-term marriage to Francoise Kirkland.

The energetic and charismatic photographer, now in his late 80’s, describes his famous photoshoot with Marilyn Monroe and how she propositioned him in a sexual manner. He responded by continuing to take photos of her while giving her the space to seduce the camera.

The film centers on Kirkland’s storied life with interviews of celebrities weaved in to enrich those stories. Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, Andy Garcia, and Elle Fanning are just a few of Kirkland’s clients who lend their voice to praise the longtime photographer.

“The best art, of all, comes from people who are willing to be present, willing to give their best, and aren’t full of shit,” said Sharon Stone.

Since 1960, Kirkland has photographed over 2,000 assignments and more than 600 major celebrities. He has worked on the sets of more than 150 motion pictures, including The Sound of Music, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Out of Africa, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Romancing the Stone, Titanic, and many more.

Today, Kirkland’s photographs are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., among others.
