With all the rain and sunshine lately, we can expect wildflowers to explode in the surrounding hillsides, especially Figueroa Mountain.

A few edhat readers have reached out to ask about the status of wildflowers and we decided to reach out to a qualified source who has been updating the community on flower statuses for many years.

Helen Tarbet of the Los Padres National Forest Service answered our question on Wednesday about the status of Figueroa Mountain wildflowers.

"This year is actually a normal year for the wildflowers. It has been rainy, cold, snowy and icy and the flowers during a normal year (meaning with lots of much-needed rain) get started later. In fact, there is even a section up on Fig that the road is still closed due to black ice," said Tarbet to edhat.

Tarbet went on to state she just returned from Figueroa Mountain and found there were plenty of plants, but not flowers yet. "On Vista Point, the chocolate lilies are out and lupine and a few poppies are starting on the famous poppy hillside, but not enough to write about," she said.

Within the next week, she hopes there will be more flowers to send out a public update.

While the sun is now out and shining, the wildflowers need a little more time before Figueroa Mountain turns a lovely shade of orange.

Figueroa Mountain Wildflower Status

We just (March 15) returned from Joshua Tree park, about 5 hours' drive from here. It is a superbloom year there, and the lower elevation part of the park (the entrance from the Indio side, not 29 Palms) has miles of flowers, breathtaking, --purple, blue, white, yellow, many varieties not even shown in the identification books. From the 29 Palms side, first there are miles of sensational rock formations before reaching the flowers area. It feels like being in the middle of a "Galaxy Quest" set.

As of today the eastern side of Grass Mountain is brilliant orange as viewed from the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley!

I just rode out there on Monday. There were a few orange poppies on Grass Mountain, but its just mostly green everywhere. Not even the little yellow flowers (sorry, I'm no botanist) are in bloom. And yes. Figueroa Mountain Road is closed a little after the ranger station. The gate is closed there. Lots of debris and dirt in the road. Looking forward to going back out there in a couple of weeks. :)

Thanks for the photo of the chocolate lily. I love Figueroa Mountain wildflowers, and the drive up is beautiful. I just returned from a short trip to Arizona, and wildflowers are everywhere, lupine and every shade of yellow and orange/yellow plants imaginable. The drive from Arizona, right before Palm Springs, Indio on hwy 10, is beautiful, plenty of roadside wildflower enjoyment, by car!
