The Austrian national soccer team will be based in Goleta during the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer.
The team, officially known as the Österreichischer Fußball-Bund, will train at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Harder Stadium during the tournament, the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles announced on social media.
The Consulate expressed excitement about the team’s scheduled June arrival, saying staff from the General Consulate would be cheering them on.
The team will stay at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara and hold training sessions at Harder Stadium on the UC Santa Barbara campus.
Harder Stadium has been designated as the team’s official training site as part of the base camp arrangement.
“Hosting an international team will deliver meaningful economic benefits, supporting local businesses, hospitality jobs and vital tax revenue for community services,” Kathy Janega-Dykes, president and CEO of Visit Santa Barbara, said in a statement.
The selection places Goleta and the surrounding region in the international spotlight during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The development comes after the Goleta City Council’s approval of a Team Base Camp Host Agreement at a special meeting on January 12, 2026.
The specific national team assigned to Goleta was formally confirmed during the official announcement on January 30, the City said in the statement.

The City of Goleta present the agreement to make Goleta eligible to host a participating national team as a base camp location.
Under the agreement, Harder Stadium was identified as the training site, though a separate agreement with the University of California was required because the stadium lies outside Goleta’s city limits, Edhat previously reported.
City and regional leaders welcomed the announcement, citing both economic and community benefits associated with hosting an international team.
Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte said the city was “thrilled to welcome Team Austria, along with its delegations, media and fans.”
Meanwhile, Visit Santa Barbara, the area’s destination marketing organization, noted that this will lead to increased support for local businesses and hospitality jobs.
The Host Agreement outlines several responsibilities for the City of Goleta, including secure transportation, traffic management, public safety, and emergency services support. Police escorts will be required for team movements during the tournament period.
The estimated cost to the City to meet these obligations is $150,000, with funding proposed from existing City reserves.
The agreement does not provide reimbursement for City expenses; any unused funds would be returned to the General Fund, and expenditures will be tracked for transparency.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 national teams.
