In a heartfelt announcement that marks the end of an era, Father Larry Gosselin is set to leave the Old Mission Santa Barbara. His departure was scheduled for November 1 and sends him to take on new duties at Malibu’s Serra Retreat House, leaving behind a legacy of widespread community engagement and spiritual guidance that has resonated with residents over the last 12 years.
Since his arrival in Santa Barbara in July 2012, Father Gosselin has become a beloved fixture in the community, particularly noted for his vibrant presence at numerous public events and his role in the annual Fiesta Pequeña. His infectious enthusiasm and visible participation in community life have made him one of the city’s most recognized and cherished personalities, a role that he embraced with open arms from the very beginning.
In a three-page letter addressed to the community, Father Gosselin expressed profound gratitude towards the people of Santa Barbara, crediting them for their warmth, acceptance, and encouragement. He reflected on his journey in the city, highlighting how it has shaped him not only as a priest but as a person.
“You have truly blessed me with your acceptance, love, and care and encouraged me to more of what it is possible to grow into as a person, a friar, a priest, and a member of this community,” Father Gosselin wrote.
He revealed plans to split his time between Malibu and Santa Barbara, ensuring that the bonds he has formed and the friendships he has cultivated will continue to be a significant part of his life.
“Beloved members of the Community of Santa Barbara, you have truly been ‘good, good friends’ to me, and friendship is a very special gift of love; i.e. being and belonging together, as one. I know that I have always felt and carried a deep sense of belonging here with you, and being among you, from the very first day I arrived to Santa Barbara,” wrote Fr. Gosselin.
