One person has died and another was injured in an incident onboard an oil tanker passing through the Santa Barbara Channel on Saturday.

The ship anchored approximately one mile off the coast after calling Santa Barbara’s Harbor Patrol around 5:30 a.m. for a medical emergency involving two people.

Details of the circumstances are unknown but the U.S. Coast Guard reported one crew member had fallen into an empty tank suffering fatal injuries and a second crew member was seriously injured. Both crew members were transported to the Santa Barbara Harbor and then Cottage Hospital.

The tanker will remain off the Santa Barbara coast until the investigation is complete.

  1. The accident evidently occurred in the local channel. The ship’s track showed it left directly from Long Beach heading north along the CA shore past and then around Anacapa Island and heading west through the channel until when it was nearly adjacent to Santa Cruz, it abruptly turned north and came directly to Santa Barbara.
