A collision between a Metrolink train and a semi-truck claimed the life of the truck driver on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials. The crash occurred at an uncontrolled rail crossing west of the City of Moorpark, north of State Route 118.
Emergency responders, including California Highway Patrol, Moorpark Police, and approximately 45 personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD), were on the scene soon after the incident was reported at 2:14 p.m.. Investigators learned a semi-tractor was towing two trailers of lemons southbound from a privately owned ranch when a collision occurred with an eastbound Metrolink Train.
Initial investigation indicates that the driver of the semi-tractor, 23-year-old Jose Avila of Fillmore, was ejected as a result of the collision. Life-saving measures were initiated by nearby workers and responding sheriff’s deputies; however, Avila was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The train had 17 passengers and a crew of two on board at the time. Despite the severity of the collision, all five train cars and the engine remained upright on the tracks. Only one passenger reported minor injuries, according to authorities.
