Falcon 9 Launch Successful

The Vandenberg Air Force Base Falcon 9 Launch was a success yesterday, launching from Space Launch Complex-4 at 11:51 a.m.

Falcon 9 provides FORMOSAT-5, an observation satellite to a low-Earth orbit. It is the first satellite manufactured by Taiwan’s National Space Organization. Col. Gregory E. Wood was the launch safety authority. He is the acting 30th Space Wing vice commander.

FORMOSAT-5 operates at an altitude of 720 km in a sun synchronous orbit, using an optical Remote Sensing Instrument. You can learn more about FORMOSAT-5 here.

A new launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 11:50 a.m. Public viewing will be available at Hawk’s Nest on Highway 1, and On-Base viewing at 35th Street and New Beach Blvd.

Check out out this clip of a static fire, used in preparation to test flight readiness.

Here is a map to the Hawk’s Nest Viewing Site. If you get lost, you can google map Azalea Lane for help. Gate opens at 10:30 and closes at 11:40 a.m.
