The onramp to the SB 101 at Fairview is closed until 2/3. Traffic is a nightmare on overpass. No statement from City of Goleta or Cal Trans that I know of.

I'm pretty shocked at all this. That muck contains oil and gas from all the wrecked cars AND raw sewage. Yes, the sewers flood, too. I'm all for fixing things, helping the community, and getting back to some kind of normal but we cannot just dump this stuff without proper treatment! There has to be a place they can setup a wash plant. It's a huge problem and a big challenge.

Many years ago all that stuff was dumped on East Beach...

TADGES, Thank you for telling us that it worked for 30 years. It is so easy to be a critic with no background knowledge.

My lay opinion suspicion is that the commentators have no expert knowledge of whether or not it is better to deposit the freeway mud on the side of the road or on the beach. Opinions seem simply to ooze out and most are critical of any action taken by the people who actually have to deal with this (or any) mess. Please show bit of understanding and respect.

I went by it today not knowing it was closed, the only people they are letting through are trucks with mud/debris or ones that just had some in it and we’re heading back to get more. That was my observation for the 5 minutes I was stuck at the red light. Also, I realized the sign said it’s not going to be back opened until February 3rd. So 20 more days of traffic on top of traffic that I thought could not get any worse.

Since this seems to be answered, I'd like to know who the genius was who signed off on the ending/merging of the NB #1 lane coinciding with the NB Fairview onramp.

Most of them were not geniuses but rather graduate engineers and engineering techs like myself who were given limited ROW, limited funds and traffic surveys that showed this design would be sufficient for years. It worked pretty well for about 30 years until the big boxes and out of control housing and hotel construction became the norm. Also it's 3 lanes merging to 2, the other is an on ramp.

4 lanes merging to 2 lanes under a bridge? There must have been someone who said “let’s go with that plan.” And NO ONE argued??????

Correction: I meant to say "southbound onramp" instead of "offramp" :)

I drove past on the 101 on my way home from work today. The slow lane just south of the offramp was closed due to some kind of work being done. There must have been at least ten dump trucks parked in the slow lane. On the Caltrans website, the map icon for that closure just says "Construction".

When I passed by it on 101S, there were a whole bunch of dump trucks lined up like a convoy on the south bound lane created by the Fairview on ramp. Perhaps they have it closed to enable faster Montecito-Goleta Beach round trip mud dump runs? I never saw so many dump trucks in the this town before.

Being used to dump debris from the flow. There was a very well established homeless encampment that was there in the brush that was recently removed and its gonna now be a good place to put some extra mud. I am sure there will be complaints about that as well. Better than the beach IMHO even if it was building up our coast.

Oh I totally agree. Rescuing and recovering people are #1, but I am also glad they have at least one alternative to dumping it straight in the ocean. Eventually it all ends up there, but soil is an excellent filter on the way for all the toxic substances.

Was not a fan of it but it was the best they had. I did not mean to shun anyone for their concern of the environment but at this point we are beyond rescue and its time to think about the long term impacts of this. There is not a perfect solution but I am glad to see we are working options.
