Update by the City of Goleta
November 24, 2021

The City of Goleta completed the repairs to the Fairview Avenue and Calle Real traffic signal today. We want to thank Goleta Public Works and its contractors who worked together to get the signal running again.

Utility work unrelated to the traffic signal will continue in the area next week.

The City understands this is a well-traveled intersection and busy area. We thank you for your patience and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Update on Fairview and Calle Real Traffic Signal - Plan Alternate Route
November 17, 2021

The City of Goleta is requesting the public continue to avoid the Fairview Avenue and Calle Real intersection due to a traffic signal that is not functioning and in need of repair. The intersection is currently operating with a 4-way stop until repairs are completed. It is unknown how long it will take to resolve the issue but please plan on choosing alternate routes if possible until further notice. We will update you as soon as the traffic signal is up and running again.

Goleta Public Works has been diligently working to resolve the issue since it learned this morning that the electrical wiring to the traffic signal was inadvertently damaged during nearby construction. A specialty company has been called in to assist with the repairs. In addition, Caltrans is monitoring any issues on US 101 northbound approaching the Fairview Avenue offramp.

The City understands this is a well-traveled intersection and busy area. We thank you for your patience as we work to get the intersection operating normally again.

I can’t imagine this intersection could possibly be much worse than normal. I would advise anyone to avoid this intersection even when the signal is working, it sucks! If I’m not mistaken, this is the slowest light in the county. They ought to put up a sign like the old state street and 101 signal had advising everyone to turn off their cars when they stop at the red light.

I'm pretty sure the "slowest light" is when you're heading east on Calle Real and catch the red light right near Earl Warren and the 101 onramp, just before you get to Las Positas. I timed that light at 90+ seconds. ---- With my engine shut off.

I've contacted the City of Goleta multiple times regarding improperly timed lights, lights that give priority to streets with low traffic, etc and I never even get the courtesy of a reply. They plop these lights down, set a default timing and then leave, causing untold pollution from idling vehicles at empty cross streets.

The light at Glen Annie and Calle Real is out of control. At the stop light towards the freeway - it allowed the left turn arrows go for two separate rounds before letting the traffic from Glen Annie towards the freeway. Sat there for 10 minutes.

This is one intersection/interchange where a roundabout would probably improve the flow of cars once people got used to it. Unfortunately, urban roundabouts often work out poorly for bicycles and always work out poorly for pedestrians and there are plenty of cyclists and pedestrians using Fairview avenue who have no viable alternatives.

Do you really think the City of Goleta has the money to condemn 3 gas stations and a large business. When I did the Hollister and Fairview intersection we barely had the contingencies to cover the problems with Jiffy Lube and Big Brand. Maybe you could re-align the gas stations so people could get their gas along while stopping around through the roundabout. That would be about as likely.

Is it me, or has timing changed with this light.? Seems to last longer than in the past. The backup has gotten worse. Time and traffic study is long overdue. I don’t see that volume has increased in past 90 days. Light timing has changed for the worse!!

Fairview Avenue and Calle Real Intersection Traffic Signal Fixed

The Fairview/Calle Real intersection has always been a very lengthy wait, and I avoid it.

I generally come from the west on Calle Real, and I avoid that intersection by turning left on Vega, then right on Shirrell to Fairview, right on Fairview, then either left on Encino and right on Encino Lane, or left into the driveway that services Mechanics Bank back entrance located just north of the World Gas Station.

I normally reverse this route to go back home.

Yesterday, I went this route to get gas at World. Exiting the gas station and turning right on Calle Real was a real treat. It took me less than 30-seconds to wait my turn then cross Fairview and continue on Calle Real. The other drivers were all courteous, waited their turn. The traffic blended well.

If this signal is repaired and the wait times remain, I will continue to avoid it with the detour described above.
