Around noon Saturday, someone wrecked a very expensive car at the corner of Calle Real & La Cumbre and then LEFT!!!  The tow truck driver said the Porche GT2RS is worth about $300,000. He said the person who called it into tow company said to drop it off at the dealer. Police were at the scene.

I'm sorry but where did you get the info on the second car and driver? Though I fully support your effort to burst the haters' speculative balloons.

Was this a single car accident..... nobody else was involved???? No other cars involved???? No other damage, except to the fancy car???? If so, the person doesn't need to stay at the scene.....

So does that mean we have to carry more collision insurance in case we have an accident and damage an expensive car? Teslas are pretty common out there....

You should carry $100k per accident of Property Damage Liability and $100k/300k per person/per accident of Bodily Injury Liability around here.

Hit and run. Quite likely some sort of DUI to cause someone to abandon such a pricey Porsche. May not have been registered (lots of super-mega autos never wear plates).

I'd venture to guess 40% of the drivers in SB don't have insurance and at least 25% don't have a DL... hence, the hit and runs...

Yes and in CA if it lapses the dmv is notified electronically and they will fine you AND suspend your license even if it's not at renewal. I am a licensed insurance agent and see it happen pretty frequently.

@1:28 PM: You weren't asked for proof of insurance at sticker renewal time because it's already on file with the DMV. However, had your policy lapsed in the interim, the insurance company would have notified the DMV and you would have to show proof of insurance. When I registered my Nevada car in California, I couldn't understand why I subsequently had to show proof of insurance every year. Turns out the insurance company was still using my Nevada address, so the DMV never was informed the car was insured.

1474...True you must have insurance to register a car. But the irresponsible and/or persons unable to afford insurance just stop after a month or two and their insurance lapses. They already have their registration in hand. I was a victim of that myself and had to use my uninsured motorist policy to cover the damages.

1:28, are you sure that story wasn't about using the software to scan license plate numbers to see if they are associated with an undocumented worker? They use them in some places in LA and apparently they are very common in England. If you are undocumented you have to decide if you are more afraid of ICE getting you or local law enforcement busting you during a traffic stop and popping up on ICE's radar that way.

Interesting, doesn't everyone with a registered car have to have insurance? ...But, thinking about it, I wasn't asked for proof of insurance at the AAA when I re-registered. Just yesterday, there was a NYT story on how ICE is using facial recognition software to scan license databases. Probably that will mean that even fewer will have driver licenses. To license those here illegally it was argued it improved safety.

I always reflected with some awe that one could be involved in a collision with cars that cost as much or more than houses. $300k is nowhere close to the price of many of the cars in Montecito and SB. Drive with care!

The car is expensive only if you cant afford it. People who make a lot of money would say its cheap
