The San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department will begin paving roads on October 26, 2025.
The work will continue till December 18, and the department has advised drivers to expect delays during this time.
The Public Works Department said in a statement on October 21, 2025, that the work dates may change depending on the weather.
Safety Measures and Traffic Control
To keep traffic moving safely, crews will implement one-way traffic control and flaggers at different locations. Residents will be distributed door-to-door notices 72 hours before paving begins, while temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be installed in advance to alert drivers.
The department further noted that no street parking will be allowed on paving days. While driveway access will be briefly restricted while the asphalt hardens, emergency vehicles will continue to have access.
Crews will remove existing road striping and replace it with temporary markings before paving and permanent striping afterward. Only minor traffic delays are expected. In Nipomo, ADA curb ramps will be upgraded on Burton Street and Hazel Lane, with minimal traffic impacts.
Roads to Undergo Paving Work
Drivers should anticipate delays due to new asphalt paving on several roads throughout San Luis Obispo County. Temporary driveway access restrictions will be in place. Paving will take place in Los Berros, Nipomo, and Pismo Beach.
San Luis Obispo County maintains approximately 1,100 miles of paved roads. According to the statement, the project will add a fresh 2-inch layer of new asphalt to improve road quality and extend road life.
This follows Edhat’s October 9, 2025, report that the Morretti Canyon Road bridge would be temporarily closed for repairs from October 21 to 23.
The Morretti Canyon Road bridge, situated 1.5 miles east of Orcutt Road, would be closed daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. However, the bridge would remain open outside of these hours, the County Department of Public Works said.
Why Road Paving is Necessary for SLO County
Beyond this project, road paving remains a key infrastructure priority for San Luis Obispo County for maintaining infrastructure, improving safety, and improving mobility. After the major storms in 2023 caused widespread damage, timely paving has become even more critical to keep roads in good condition.
Addresses Storm Damage: Road resurfacing is critical for addressing damage from extreme weather events and restoring safe driving conditions. By repairing storm-damaged roads, paving reduces the backlog of work orders and ensures safer travel.
Extends Road Life: Regular paving extends road lifespan and prevents the need for costly full replacements. Routine maintenance preserves the quality of roads and delays the more expensive process of reconstruction. Resurfacing and maintenance help roads last longer while reducing long-term repair costs.
Improves Safety: Paving creates smoother, safer surfaces and, in some areas, includes upgrades such as bike lanes and traffic-calming measures. Road resurfacing enhances safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Paved roads reduce hazards like potholes and uneven surfaces, improving overall safety.
Enhances Mobility: Road improvements support smoother traffic flow and safer, more accessible routes throughout the county. Enhancing mobility through paving ensures roads can handle traffic efficiently and safely.
Allows for Efficient Management: Using a pavement management plan, the county prioritizes projects and allocates resources efficiently, saving time and costs. It helps organize paving work in defined areas, reducing mobilization expenses and maximizing results.
Structured planning allows San Luis Obispo County to maintain roads cost-effectively and strategically.
