County emergency responders had the honor of delivering a baby in the Cuyama Valley while transporting the laboring mother to a local hospital.

On Wednesday afternoon, Santa Barbara County Firefighter Paramedics Rescue 27 and the CalStar 7 helicopter responded to a medical emergency call.

Upon arrival they discovered a mother in labor with contractions down to three minutes and decided a flight to the hospital is not possible.

The CalStar flight crew joined county paramedics on the drive to Santa Maria’s Marion Regional Medical Center.

On Highway 166, between Cuyama and Santa Maria near the Spanish Ranch, baby couldn’t wait any longer and was delivered in the back of the ambulance .

At 1:45 p.m., a baby girl named Rainy Shanley entered the world. Her family recently moved to Venutcopa from the East Coast.

Both mom and baby are doing well in the hospital and received some special visitors from the emergency responders.
