Emergency responders arrived at the Gaviota Wind Caves to find an injured hiker on Sunday afternoon.

At 1:42 p.m., May 10, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and State Parks responded to the area and discovered a 54-year-old female hiker with an injury.

The hiker was hoisted by Air Support Helicopter 308 and flown directly to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment, according to the fire department.

Edhat’s Bob on the Scanner initially reported the emergency response stating emergency crews were stationed on an access road near the Beach to Backcountry Trail off Highway 101.

“As warmer afternoons brings more people outdoors, please remember to stay safe on the trails: wear proper footwear, carry water, know your limits, and let someone know your plans before heading out,” the County Fire Department states.

The fire department did not release any further information.

  1. “Know your limits.” This is absolutely the best single piece of advice for wannabe “trailblazers.” Also, be sure that you have sufficient non-alcoholic hydration (such as water) and proper gear (especially footwear). Far too many people requiring extraction on our trails simply because they are ill-prepared or had no business heading out due to lack of physical conditioning. Everyone should have some form of a safety checklist before heading out into wilderness.
