Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue responded to an activated Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal at about 3:40 p.m. on Friday, December 26, at Santa Barbara Airport.
Using direction-finding equipment, teams triangulated the beacon to the vicinity of an aviation school on the airfield, Search and Rescue stated.
Once on the tarmac, rescuers located a safely parked, unoccupied aircraft emitting the signal. The ELT was determined to have been inadvertently activated and was subsequently switched off.
Airport authorities were notified of the aircraft’s exact location and tail number so they could contact the owner.
ELTs are one of several emergency distress beacons used to alert authorities to potential trouble. In aviation, ELTs are designed to broadcast a distress signal in an emergency; similar devices include EPIRBs for maritime use and PLBs for individuals.
When any distress beacon is detected within Santa Barbara County, SBCSAR is dispatched through the 911 system to investigate, using specialized equipment to quickly locate the source and determine whether it is an actual emergency or a false activation.

This happens from time to time and is not entirely uncommon at SBA and other airports. ELT’s can be activated accidentally by a manual switch or intentionally by a very hard landing or crash. This type of incident is usually ferreted out by local airport operations quickly with a small antenna and receiver.
