I took the below picture near sand beach & Elwood beach.  Normally one can see 4 ft of the beam (me pictured w/abalone shell in hand).  My height is 5’01” in comparison to the beam.

In my hand (above) is the largest Abalone shell I have ever come across.  I run everyday on the beach and normally only see the size pictured above.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting to see those pilings get covered and uncovered over the years, as the sand comes and goes. The shell is a nice find, I can remember when you could see a huge pile of those shells next to the freeway near Fairview, and many people in Goleta had a large one on their coffee table as an ashtray. Oh how times change LOL. glad to see you photos.

Great photos Emma!

I’m guessing, but the one you are holding in your hand next to the steel piling is a red abalone? Bummer you didn’t include a photo of it.

With the colored banding, I think it is from the abalone farm a mile or so up the coast.

I have a 4' long rusted piece of one of those pilings in my yard, as a piece of found art. It was loose and I picked it up back in 1997 or so. I had to carry it a couple miles to my girlfriend's house, and I was exhausted after doing so since it weighed so much. It was worth the effort.

We've picked up 3 in shells of green ab in the past in the area. So good to see these creatures growing out there now. Thanks for sharing!

The shell looks pretty diminutive to me. Used to be able to pick off legal size abalone (currently 7" at widest part) off rocks at low tide. This looks like maybe 5"? Still, nice to know that some of these shell fish are still around the shoreline.

The top photo is for reference, the bottom photo shows the plate sized shell in her hand.
