Easter Bunny Hands Out Egg Hunting Supplies

Many local families will have a little extra fun this Easter weekend with the help of the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department and the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

The City’s yearly park egg hunts, known as Eggstravaganza, were cancelled this year in observance of the statewide stay-at-home order, but supplies had already been ordered and would have sat unused were it not for some quick thinking by the Parks and Recreation youth activities team.

“We wanted to find a safe way to get the Eggstravaganza eggs and candy out into the community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jill Zachary. “I’m proud that we were able to turn the Eggstravaganza events’ cancellations into something very positive that will brighten the weekend for many families during this difficult time.”

800 goody bags were packed up by Parks and Recreation staff earlier this week. The bags, which will allow families to have their own smaller-scale egg hunts in the safety of their homes, were distributed Friday at Adams, Franklin, Monroe, and Harding Elementary Schools.

The traditional Eggstravaganza bunny mascot, wearing a cloth face mask and waving from a safe distance to model healthy social distancing, was in attendance at Adams as families received their student meals from the drive-through grab-and-go pickup.
