Saturday morning, walking my dog along Chase Palm Park, I saw mounds of sand and a Corps of Army Engineers sign lying on the ground; the bike path was blocked off by two trucks, with rental signs on them- I didn't note what they were, except they were not City of SB trucks. Further down, more or less opposite Calle Vallarta, there was a backhoe at work and three men standing around.

I asked politely what the trench was for? And I got a response from the old one in the center to get off the beach (I was on the ice box plant) and that "(I) should be at home!" I was so startled by his rudeness that all I said was, No, I shouldn't be at home, that I was walking my (very visible) dog.

Anyway, there was no answer to the question about the trench. I don't think these were City of SB employees, Waterfront or Parks; there was no sign of a Coastal Commission permit which must be obtained. No dredging was going on at the harbor. Anyone have a guess about the trench?

LOL --- water is too cold for alligators, though.

Looks like it's for some sort of pipeline. You should've responded: "And you guys should be 6 feet apart!"

Why is that, PSTARSR? My dog does not poop at home; and, in general, there are fewer people along Chase Palm Park than there are on the streets. Imho, one of the unpleasant, although secondary, effects of this crisis is how it has encouraged people to tell other people what they "should" do.

Pstars - walking at the beach or being outdoors is not illegal, nor dangerous. Be smart and enjoy the outdoors.

Looks like the annual dredge pipe installation.

Usually, the large black pipe is on the surface and then the pipe is removed after the spring cycle; this was quite far down East Beach, but maybe they are planning to dig all the way back to Mission Creek outflow and leave it there for years?

I can see that the workers wouldn’t want looky-loos pestering them, but it is acceptable to go outside for a walk, as long as one stays well away from other people. I’d recommend much more than six feet, so as not to frighten or annoy others—especially if they are at work.

It is dredge material from the SB Harbor.

I guess you could have reported them for violating the 6 ft rule? Why do people breaking rules seem concerned about other people breaking rules?

1. This is such a scam, they do this every year when they could easily and simply install a permanent pipe where they install this temporary one.
2. That old guy on the right is one big ignoramus. I was taking photos of them walking all over tie ice plant 3 years ago and he ran after me screaming obscenities and threatening me.

The old man is the worst. I've seen him flick his cigarettes on beach. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture
