Last week, on April 28, a three-car accident took place around 10:00 pm in the Bel Air neighborhood. A 19-year-old driver, under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, was traveling 60-70 mph on residential streets with four juveniles and crashed into a parked car.

Two passengers exited the back seat and fled the scene, the driver attempted to put the car in reverse and run, but his car was wrecked. The driver and front-seat passenger were saved by airbags deploying. Police, fire, and ambulance were on the scene, miraculously there were no serious injuries.

Local artist and Palace Grill server, Sheryl Schroeder was the owner of the 4Runner that was totaled. Friends have put together a GoFundMe page for her to help her during this tough time, her brother recently passed away in early April, now this drunk driver totaled her car.

A donation fund can be found here.

Drinking has clearly increased from the stress of SARS-CoV-2 and all the free time the shutdown has created. That's understandable. But how blind drunk are these drivers getting before grabbing their car keys??? Also, how much of a role is speed playing in all these crashes? Most of us have probably noticed how fast people are driving as a result of empty roads. From the damage to that 4Runner, the driver was clearly in excess of the posted limit for that residential neighborhood.

According to the GoFundMe page, the insurance company is only covering the Blue Book value of the vehicle. Cheap bastards.

GoFundMe says the insurance will only cover the Blue Book value of her car. Apparently it was an old model and the BB value won't cover the cost of another decent car. I had a vehicle completely totaled once, and since it was a very old, I received less than $2k for it. Definitely not enough to replace it with anything, so I understand the GoFundMe gesture made on her behalf.

It is also difficult with Toyotas because their KBB value is often lower than their actual, replacement value. KBB is not accurate for older 4runners at all. The high demand for them raises the actual price.

Insurance uses a different method called a Black Book, it is more money than blue book... between that policy and her own she should get money to buy another car. A GoFundMe for this is sort of silly... not being snippy, I'm an insurance agent and don't see the validity. The loss of job is common right now and unemployment is paying many people more than what they were making while working. I have a close friend who was working at the Palace and they are getting way more than they got working, plus that lovely stimulus payment on top of it! They are spending more on food because they aren't eating at work BUT are saving it on entertainment so it actually is ending up with them having MORE money than while working.

This particular person had many many hardships, not just the money. Did you read the story? Lost business, lost job, her brother passed away, then this. You do not know what people's personal financial or emotional situations are. Her friends started this for her because she really needed help. There was a good response. People who are hating on the fundraiser are just petty. As a community, we should help one another. It's heartening when we see people come together to help one in need.

I'm sorry someone hit her favorite parked car but the rational on the go fund me page is just a bit over the top....just goes to show if you can weave together a compelling story people pull $$ out of their wallet-

If you read the GoFundMe page at all or the story you would see that her friends put together the GoFundMe page in a loving gesture of community support. This woman not only lost her job, but a business she had been trying to open for a decade, then her brother passed away on April 4th, then this drunk driver totaled her car. What a nasty comment about a loving thing her friends and community did! WOW. Many people are suffering in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, some more than others, but you make it sound like a money grab, when that is not what this was at all.

The 19 year-olds driver should cover it, no deductible and full replacement value. That may indeed be KBB value but in my experience these things can be negotiated. She can simply go on line, find the asking price of a similar make, model, year of the 4 runner ( or 5 of them) and then give the insurance company. She has to agree to the settlement.
