New reports claim the driver who died in this collision attempted to pass vehicles occupying both lanes by driving into the center median.

All drivers were in the southbound lanes when the passing vehicle clipped one of the southbound vehicles and crossed into oncoming traffic, reports KEYT.

The passing vehicle then collided head-on with a white SUV in the northbound lane. The passing vehicle then went off the road where it caught fire, killing the driver. Their identity has not been released.

The driver of the white SUV, an elderly woman, was taken to the hospital with major injuries. There were no other injuries in the third vehicle involved.

At 11:13 a.m., Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to Highway 1 and Constellation Road in Lompoc in the Vandenberg Village area. Driver Identified in Fatal Head-On Traffic Collision

Since the new construction a few months ago, some stretches of the road from Buellton to Lompoc are 65 (they are 4 lanes). The rest, (2 lanes) are 55. From Harris grade intersection to Hwy 135 in Santa Maria, it's 65, There appear to be 2 lanes, but it's actually 4 with a very wide, overgrown brush and sometimes k-rail, divider. Why anyone would try and drive through the brush is a mystery.

Too many speed demons on that stretch of road. Your life isn’t worth getting to Lompoc 5 min sooner. Poor woman, I hope she fully recovers. I travel that a lot for work. I keep it at 59mph max, and I don’t care how many impatient people back up behind me.

Someone passed me on this road yesterday and he had to be going 100 mph. Not exaggerating. I was going 65, the speed limit. It was a black BMW and he got off on Santa Lucia Road.

Poor woman, through no fault of her own, badly injured when she was simply headed down the road. Hope her injuries can be healed without lasting problems. But, as we get older it takes a toll on our ability to overcome injuries.
