A driver in a convertible BMW was cited for allegedly traveling 124 mph in a 65-mph zone on northbound U.S. 101 near the Turnpike Road exit, the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Barbara office said in a social media post Thursday, April 9.
“Speeds like this significantly reduce reaction time and increase stopping distance,” CHP wrote, urging motorists to obey posted limits, stay aware of surrounding traffic, and drive at safe speeds for conditions. The post included a photo of the BMW pulled over on the shoulder and a citation noting the location south of Turnpike Road.
The driver was cited under California Vehicle Code 22348(b), which governs speeds over 100 mph. A conviction under 22348(b) can result in steep fines (approximately $900–$1,000 or more), a 30-day driver’s license suspension, and two points on the driving record for seven years. Insurance premiums are also likely to rise significantly for that period.

124 mph is about 182 feet per second. If his reaction time was extremely fast it may be around 0.5 seconds, which means that once he becomes aware that he needs to stop the car he will travel 90 feet before his foot hits the brakes. At the more typical reaction time of about 1.5 seconds, his car would travel over 270 feet, almost a whole football field, before he even hit the brakes.
