Hate to hear these stories, bad for the breed, bad for the owners of the other dog, bad for everyone.

Pitmix (?), it is not "bad for the breed" to tell people that pit bulls are dangerous and almost impossible to control or trust. We need more information, not less. We need aggressive controls to keep this known danger at bay.

The most recent people deaths I read about were by rottweilers, but stories like this just stoke the fears of pitbulls as you so ably demonstrated. A standard poodle killed a small dog at Hendry's a few years ago, so are you scared of them too? Anyway, it is the owner's responsibility to keep their dogs from hurting anything, so hopefully the owners will be hit with big fines as well as the pain of having their dogs killed by the County.

Pit is correct that Rottweilers are also incredibly dangerous and responsible for numerous deadly attacks, and non-lethal maulings and traumas, every year. I believe the PSI in their jaws may be even higher than Pits, but I think Pits are more popular and thus we have a lot more Pit Bull massacres every year than Rotts.

"Hold the owner responsible" is not a satisfactory compensation for the loss of the destroyed pet. Damages awarded in court can only mitigate, never compensate for the wrong done in cases such as this.

SB Townie, your ignorance is showing. Latest study by the Chicago Injury Center concluded that dog attacks were most common with the following breeds:
Labrador retrievers: 13.3%
Pit Bulls: 8.4%
German Shepherds: 7.8%
Rottweilers: 3.9%
Chows: 3.5%
So SB Townie, since clearly you and are an expert in the field, should we ban Labrador retrievers? "Pit Bulls" have an extremely strong bite force, are often very strong and can be extremely focused, which in the hands of irresponsible owners is dangerous and can be lethal. Pitties are not for everyone, nor are rotties, dobermans, German shepherds and some other breeds. Pitties are also some of the most loving, affectionate, obedient and loyal dogs you will ever meet. For a long time they were called "nanny dogs" and were used as babysitters. However the same traits that make them loyal, trusted guardians of the family have been used for nefarious means. Since any moron with bad intent or with no intention of giving the training, attention and discipline that any of these breeds requires can obtain one as easy as buying a pack of cigarettes, horrible events like this happen.

I feel horribly for the dog that was attacked and for its family. There's no excuse for two dogs of any breed to be loose and capable of inflicting damage like this. And to be clear, it's not a case of "it's not the dog, it's the owner". Pit bulls were bred hundreds of years ago to fight in a ring. Rottweilers guarded the Roman Legions. German shepherds have been used for security for hundreds of years. It cannot be denied that certain protective behaviors are part of their bloodline. Responsible people can have dogs for security of their home, property and families. These breeds require training, constant attention and discipline. Banning a breed is not the answer. Holding the owner responsible and making it sting is.

Statistics like that can be very misleading unless you also include the population numbers for each of the breeds. I suspect there are many, many more Labrador Retrievers than there are Pit Bulls.

Get a life, Nicoyaspa. You clearly know that 66% of all fatal attacks are caused by Pits, but you're deliberately obscuring it with your (questionable) statistics about "dog attacks" which could count for just about anything. Labs are not going around regularly murdering other dogs, toddlers, and people and you know it. Stop the lies.

Nicoya, you are also very wrong about the "nanny dog" myth. This was never true, and you can easily verify it by googling it. The same is often said about Staffies from the UK who are similar to pits, very cute, but have some violent tendencies due to selective breeding and jaw PSI, too. This myth about staffies, and later pits, dates back to 1971 and it was never true that these dogs were used as "nanny dogs." They were largely the dogs of the lower classes, and they were bred for pit fighting and you know it.

@917 i've owned several pittys and know many. your opinion just screams that you have no idea about the breed.
There are many other breeds far more dangerous than pits. I in fact have a few of them. Belgian Malinois.
Every pit i have owned or known throughout my 51 years here, has been a sweet animal with a loving home and good training. Any dog can be a menace if not properly trained and socialzied. so stop spouting off when you are just quoting things you've heard from others. blaming an entire breed is ignorant.

ZeroHawk Sep 01, 2021 11:39 AM

Rotts and Dobies are far more dangerous than a staffordshire pit. malinois are more vicious than pits and are trained to attack. they are also full of love and think they are lap dogs. they play well with all other dogs, accept the little vicious chihuahuas....
now imagine if a chihuahua was the size of even a small pit...that would be a terrifying animal.

Everybody and their dog owns a Lab type breed (including Golden Retrievers) which skews the # of incidents.

Why would anyone have a vicious dog trained to attack - as a pet? What a psycho.

SBTownie Sep 01, 2021 04:09 PM

The worst part is most of them aren't even "trained." They attack at will. I agree that Malinois are even more dangerous than pits... however there are very few malinois in the USA and tons of pits. I think it's time we considered, short of a full ban, licensing requirements for certain breeds. If you can't actually prove yourself a capable handler of pits, malinois, even shepherds (I am ashamed to say my family owned two untrained shepherds when I was a kid and one attacked a dog at More Mesa about 25 years ago, though this was my irresponsible parents' fault and not mine, it still causes me much horror) and offer the proper gear to restrain them, training to handle them, etc. you should not be able to own them.

Sounds like it happened at the market victim dog was on a leash. I hate posting but this is one of those calls that must be posted to protect others. Police on scene code 4 with both parties...Sure AC 3 is still responding.

My puppy was in his yard playing with 2 other dogs! He was attacked in his own yard. He was not out or on a leash! I never post anything as well but it’s not what it’s been said! He is alive!

When your listening to a scanner and reporting what you hear all kinds of different things are reported. First I heard a dog was killed by two Pit Bulls in a yard. Then I heard the dog was on a leash at the market when it was attacked. I heard it was in the 1100 Block of Cacique street I report what I hear I do not respond to the location I'm sorry if things were not exactly right but I report what I hear.

Destroy them. Enough with Pit Bulls. My irresponsible relative has owned two that have killed other dogs. No one can claim this is "just about bad owners." Sure, it is. And bad owners seem to gravitate toward the worst breeds of dogs. Toxic combo. But one we can get rid of, the other we can't. Many countries in the civilized world have banned this horrible breed.

PitMix Aug 31, 2021 01:01 PM
Dog Attack on Cacique

I can only find these: New Zealand, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, France, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Norway, and the U. S. territory of Puerto Rico. Not very many civilized nations out there I guess.

What I find curious is that these dogs were brought to the US and bred to be bigger and stronger than their European forebears. Do you think our fascination with bigger and stronger things has anything to do with what is happening?

I would say many of the countries in the list you find small are among the most enlightened and civilized places on earth. And they are definitely banned in the UK as well.

Today, 4.5 million pitbulls woke up, ate, played, slept, and lived their lives loving their families. No bites, no attacks, no killings, just happy dog lives. Don’t judge them all based on a few irresponsible owners.

I don't think we should eradicate pitbulls or anything, but i wouldnt be quick to chalk up this behavior to irresponsible owners. Some times this breed just loses its mind.

Unfortunately, leashed dogs are often attacked by unleashed dogs. Seems the canine mind is quick to recognize a "handicapped" member of its own species.

I have read the riot act to more than one owner who says their off-leash dog is friendly. I don't care to test their arrogant theories with my dog's life.

If the pitbulls HAD been leashed, this would not have happened. Isn't that enough ?

Pit bull or any other breed - if it attacks, maims, kills another dog or person it should be euthanized. Mostly it is pit bulls.

Thank you for your words. My dog Vinny is alive he doesn’t have any internal bleeding or broken bones he was attacked in our yard by 3 pit bulls that belong to the neighbor. Vinny was with our 2 other dogs Mona & Bruno when all this happened! Vinny is a puppy! Thank god nothing happened to Mona and Bruno. Vinny is at the pet hospital until tomorrow at Haley and Gutierrez. He will recover.

I feel for you. It's absolutely devastating to have your little fur buddy murdered. I'm still devastated about losing my precious babies last year. I moved to Idaho to help care for my grandkids during Covid. The neighbor who lived behind me was a red hatter (hater) who hated Californians, Hispanics, and Hippies, and wanted me to "go because I don't belong " there, (he even called me an illegal when my ancestors have been here since the 1500's and earlier! ) - so he poisoned my precious cat and dog who I'd raised since babies for weaned 13 years. It was beyond devastating, a nightmare. It took everything in me not to scream at the monster and jump over the fence and slap the hell out of him. I recorded one of his awful hate filled rants where he admitted doing it, but the Prosecutor refused to press charges. She hadn't even listened to the whole 7 minute recording! Only heard a half minute clip of it! She said she would try to find and listen to it, but "still wouldn't press charges"!! I moved away and now am all alone without my precious fur babies and grandbabies nearby to love and cuddle anymore. It's beyond heartbreaking.

Carli, I hope your neighbor’s dogs will be taken by animal control so they can’t attack yours or anyone else’s dogs ever again. Clearly the owner doesn’t have control over their dangerous animals. I’m so glad to hear Vinny will be ok and your other dogs were unharmed.

On the farm we use a noose and a tree to deal with a vicious dog. Some "perros de la calle" are not just beyond rescue, they are a general danger.

Rypert Johnson Sep 01, 2021 05:15 AM
Dog Attack on Cacique

It is not a question of the breed, it is a matter of their upbringing. If the owner of a canine, ANY canine, treats said canine in a malicious manner, teaches their canine to be a jerk, just like the owner, then the canine will develop the same negative traits as the individual who claims to own it.
If you look closely at ANY pitbull attack, you will find the owner of the dog involved fits a certain profile and that profile usually never amounts to a productive member of society.
If you see a pitbull with a thick chain around its neck, you can bet the owner is teaching that dog to be ajerk just like them and the sad part is that dog will probably attack another dog or a person, get destroyed and the owner lives to get another one and repeat the cycle.
Almost like "assault" type rifles, while many that own those are law abiding responsible gun owners, there's also a shady profile that is attracted to those and end up as mass shooters.
The problem isn't the breed, it is the attitude of those who adopt the breed and teach it to be as obnoxious and repulsive as the owners are.

SBTownie Sep 01, 2021 04:11 PM
Dog Attack on Cacique

It is absolutely a question of the breed, Rypert, in addition to their upbringing. Regardless of the common denialism regarding pit bull temperament and propensity to attack, no one can argue that the PSI in a pit's jaw can constitute deadly force much more easily than a pug.
