You can find all you need to do online. I've also found the clerks at the courthouse very helpful. Of course, that was several years ago but definitely worth a try

Nobody better than Carmen at We The People. She owns the business and has been successfuly guiding people since the ‘90’s. Could not be nicer or more knowledgeable. Knows all the clerks at the courthouse and can get your papers through faster than anyone. She is the very best in town!’

Superior Court has a Family Law Facilitator who has free divorce workshops to help you complete your divorce paperwork correctly and timely. The clinic is located on the first floor of the courthouse between courtrooms 5 & 6. You can call 805-882-4667, to obtain the schedule for the workshops.

Contact Victoria Cole, "About Justice" 805-563-0853... I did it, painless. Victoria will tell you over the phone what it will cost. KEEP LAWYERS OUT. As long as you and your spouse agree on everything, it is easy and cheap.

That's what I did --- Nolo Press. All the forms and how-to are there. If there are no children, no mutual ties to bank accounts/ property, that's the way to go. Have a friend lined up to deliver the papers to your soon-to-be "ex" and you're done. (I think it takes six months for it all to be finalized.) Whenever I'm asked "Marital status?" I reply: "Happily divorced." People always laugh, and I am still thrilled I "got out from under things" so easily My "ex" and I are good friends going on 25 years now. Good luck to you. Be happy. Life is short.

Under 10 year marriages, no children, no real property are intended to be DIY simple paperwork operations. See if you qualify. Second the NOLO Press recommendation for self-help legal guides. .

There are some therapists who are trained in mediation that help through the process. Much cheaper than lawyers and really helps to slog through some of the tough stuff. I don't have a specific referral but know people who have successfully gone this route.

Once you get two lawyers involved you won't recognize the gal or guy who a short time prior walked down the aisle ready and willing to take your hand.
