Does anyone know which direction Tuesday's Vandenberg launch of the Delta IV rocket will be? Typical launches head southward into polar orbits, rising away from SB. Unlike the spectacular Falcon 9 launch earlier this year that was in a more easterly path, parallel to the coastline.

Direction of Delta Launch?

All space launches from VAFB are to within a few degrees of south. Missile tests go west.

Southerly; most such satellites are put into polar orbit to enable total global coverage, launched generally south.

Spy satellites are generally in high-inclination or polar orbits, so that they have coverage of most or all of the surface, so you can expect a southerly trajectory.
