On September 21, 2017, at approximately 1:30 a.m., deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Goleta Valley Patrol Bureau responded with Santa Barbara County Fire and AMR personnel to a report of an unconscious 38-year-old male not breathing in the 6100 block of Verdura Ave. in the City of Goleta.
Deputies arrived a few minutes later prior to other emergency medical personnel. The deputies began to assess the Goleta resident’s condition and found he was breathing but remained unconscious. Believing the symptoms were signs of an overdose, one deputy administered a single dose of his issued intranasal Naloxone and within a few seconds the male was conscious and breathing normally. Fire and Medical Personnel arrived, took over care and transported the male to a local hospital for further treatment.
All Sheriff’s deputies received Naloxone, and training on its use, earlier this year through the combined effort of the Sheriff’ s Office and the Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency.
Naloxone, brand name Narcan, blocks or reverses the effects of opioids (both medications and narcotics) including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness. Due to the quick thinking and actions of the Sheriff’s deputies, this incident ended with a life saved instead of possibly a drug overdose death.
The City of Goleta contracts with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services.
