Can edhat readers recommend a dependable contractor for a small scale project? I'm looking to open up a closet wall to install a washer/dryer, and countertop installation is a plus. Thanks!

Over $500 projects do need a licensed contractor. Otherwise, there are well-recommended 'handyman" services in this town which you can find on NextDoor. Contact them first for an estimate and determine the scope of what you have in mind- might be a simple interior demolition and drywall replacement; or it may need plumbing and wiring and structural replacement.

Cutting open a wall will cost way more than $500.

Contractor Patrick. 1eight0five6362848
Patrick is amazing. He could build a house with his eyes closed, for sure.
For me, he's done a ton, including stuff just like what you're asking. (built out a kitchen, built out a bath, replaced windows, doors, lots and lots of odds and ends, even lifted my house and replaced a structural support, etc etc etc. Great guy.

As long as we are asking, anyone know who in town bolts a small frame house to the cement foundation for earthquake protection?

Mark Markmiller, of Markmiller Construction. He did our earthquake bolt and brace. He’s great: honest, reliable. But he’s in high demand, so you may have to wait awhile.

Give Mark Baird at Your Handyman a call. 805-968-1234. He is licensed, capable, reliable and honest. If he can't help you to someone good. https://yourhandymansb.com/. He and his crew have helped me for years.

Ditto the handyman recommendation. One other idea: if you're installing new plumbing for the washer and dryer you might also try to contract with a plumber who can sub out the other jobs. But FYI, most good contractors are currently booked 12-18 months out. Off subject, but if anyone is looking for work or considering a change in career, the trades are all hiring.

Look up the Construction Technology program at SBCC - pretty amazing offerings - credit and non-credit. Higher Ed Construction Management degrees are another excellent career choice. Not everything is done online; there is still plenty of demand for hands-on work.

I strongly recommend Calvin Petersen of Flagship Construction. He is licensed. They remodeled our kitchen, as well as other projects at various times for the house. Calvin and his team do impeccable work.

His number is 805-636-5152 or [email protected]

Another shout out for Calvin Petersen. He's about to start a large job on our home and he has been so energetic, friendly, available and just a great guy! He is a "can do" kind of guy, always helping out any way he can and always excited to be working. 100% for Calvin!

If you are having any electrical work done, even the replacement of a light switch or outlet, be sure to hire an electrician who is licensed and insured. Of course most handypersons can do this, but you really truly only want to use a trained electrician. Be warned.

Is this a requirement by law or just a good idea? Does it affect your insurance if you have a fire and they find out you had some work done by an unlicensed handyman?

Cleanest jobsites in town. We had her tear out a lath and plaster wall in our bedroom for a closet and every night we returned to a sparkling clean room.

John Bennett has built two structures for us (a sunroom addition to the kitchen and a garage/laundry/upstairs studio) and we were delighted. His cell is 805 866 2677.
