Democratic Party Labor Day Picnic/Redistricting Fairness Battle

The Democratic Party held its annual Labor Day Picnic this year in the big central part of Tucker’s Grove Park. Here are my photos.

By coincidence, the Republican Party also held their Labor Day Picnic at the very end of Tucker’s Grove Park. This was one of the Trump trucks at the Republican event.

Apparently they were not satisfied to have their little party. They decided to repeatedly drive their trucks up and down the length of the park. Illegally blasting their horns to disrupt the peace and intimidate other park users.

It is worth noting that the Trump banner on this truck said “Trump 2028”. Another flaunting of lawlessness, given that the Constitution limits presidents to two terms.

This is quite relevant to a theme of the Democratic picnic speeches. The Republican controlled legislature of Texas has just passed a law to redraw Congressional districts to give Trump five extra Republican seats in Congress. This was done directly at Trump’s request. Districts are normally redrawn every ten years, after a Census. This power grab is happening exactly half way between the proper redrawings due to new Census data.

California has played nice for the past 20 years with a non-partisan system of drawing Congressional districts. But this clearly is not fair if the other team plays dirty. It is as if the other team moved their goalposts and we kept ours the same. Basic fairness dictates that if the other team moves their goalposts then our team needs to do the same.

Proposition 50 will be on the ballot this November to achieve this obvious fairness. It is called the Election Rigging Response Act. The idea is not to gain political advantage. The idea is to keep a fair balance of power. The long term goal has to be fair drawing of Congressional districts nationally. Proposition 50 is a temporary suspension of non-partisan drawing of districts until other states play fair, too.

Our hard working Congress member Salud Carbajal kindly posed for me before belting out a powerful speech on fairness and lawlessness.

And here was his speech, including suitably colorful language!

Assembly member Gregg Hart spoke next. First to congratulate State Senator Monique Limon for becoming the next State Senate Leader. Which gives statewide attention and power to the Central Coast.

Hart went on to talk about how Trump responded to the horrific fires in Los Angeles. Not by offering help as every other president has in history. But by holding aid money hostage unless California makes it more difficult for people to vote.

Hart explained why we all need to support Prop 50. Anything less is “unilateral disarmament” in a war that the other side started. Here was his speech.

County Supervisor Laura Capps continued the theme, pointing out that if we want to fund the things we care about, then we have to win. And the only way to win is with the election fairness offered by Prop 50.

Ricardo Valencia is a longtime educator and community advocate and is a Trustee on the Santa Maria-Bonita School District board. He is now running for the District 5 seat on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors. Here was his speech.

Diana Love is the Secretary of the California Democratic Party. She gave a very short speech thanking everyone for all of the work they have done and that she knows they will do going forward.

I will share some more of my photos. Starting with this nice pose of Das Williams and Daraka Larimore-Hall and their kids. Daraka had been Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party and he now teaches Labor Studies at UCSB and Sociology at SBCC. Das Williams now works promoting sustainable energy with Central Coast Community Energy.

Ethan Bertrand is known to many of us for his various local elected positions. Including being founding President (and current Director) of the Isla Vista Community Services District. But who knew that he is also an amazingly talented musician! He provided the upbeat music for the event.

Charlotte Gullap-Moore is a trustee for SBCC. She kindly posed with her husband.

Supervisor Laura Capps smiled as she showed off her “Make Lying Wrong Again” hat!

Here was Goleta City Council member Luz Reyes-Martín.

Carla Mead was looking justifiably happy after winning a seat on the Buellton City Council.

Santa Barbara City Council Member Wendy Santamaria. Part of a new generation of City Council members fighting for the rights of renters and others who often did not have a voice in the past.

UCSB Sociology professor Dick Flacks continues his weekly “Culture of Protest” show on KCSB radio and he now offers it as a downloadable podcast as well.

Millions of Americans are outraged by what Trump is doing to destroy decades of progress in our country. Everything from destroying fundamental science research to declaring war on states like California that didn’t vote for him. Protests can show strength in numbers. But in the end, the power lies with the parties and the voters who turn out to support them.

  1. Since 2020 dems have lost 4.1 million supporters. Current dictatorship action mandating high density housing ,and , the erosion of CEQA have guaranteed the loss of millions more of supporters.
When you pollute, congest , endanger the ability of emergency evacuation, diminish people’s quality of life and take away community control , you loose millions of supporters.

            • You’re a political gaslighter , “pretending damage from high density housing isn’t real”. With California running out of water, that’s a fact, construction demands high water use . Climate prediction for the rest of 2025 through 2026 predicts 33-40 % above seasonal temperatures rising 40-50%,, with 40-50% below seasonal precipitation …you completely ignore the big red flag.

Only when millions of people in these units and within all of California go to turn on their taps and no water flow, might you understand. You want to build outside of natural resources capacity with high density housing, and pollute and trap the occupants who already live there.
We just came out of a 7 year drought with cities running out of water, but you gaslight like that never happened. Here is a reminder

              https://youtu.be/ezFy4BsXpdU?si=2vZKO5ZAk0MErmL0

In 2014 64% of California was in an Exceptual drought. Let’s repeat that, 64%, almost two thirds of the state was in the highest category of a drought, an exceptual drought, 80% of the state was in an extreme drought and 100 percent of the state was in at least a moderate drought= very little water for the State of California. A similar pattern happened up until 2022, it only getting worse….

Your solution , psychological cult tactic , use fear, discredit information. Political tactic 101 it’s so transparent…keep hiding behind anonymous….you’re a fake full of misinformation and a science denier…

              • Here is the solution…
                Reject high density housing
Restrict/eliminate short term rentals to drive down the price of purchasing a home and make long term rentals available

Older population will transition with 50% of housing becoming available

Nation wide $163 billion in securitized commercial mortgages are expected to mature nationwide in 2026. This includes loans from CMBS (Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities), single-borrower large-loan deals, CRE CLOs, and multifamily mortgages backed by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. California, being one of the largest real estate markets in the U.S., likely represents a significant share of that $163 billion—especially in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego.. with interest rates high people will not be able to afford to refi and will either try to sell their home or default creating a influx of homes to the market at a reduced price..

ADU’S, prefaced homes and tiny homes all self sufficient with energy and energy storage, water,

What is being pushed lacks energy efficiency, energy production or water management. It’s a complete massive monstrosity of a failure that no one wants…

                • A great solution is CoHousing communities , one of the most promising, human-scaled alternatives to the high-density mandates that often ignore California’s ecological and social realities. They offer a way to live together without being crammed together, and they’re built on values that California desperately needs right now: resilience, connection, and sustainability.

                  CoHousing is:
-A cluster of private homes with shared spaces like gardens, kitchens, workshops, and gathering areas
-Designed and managed by the residents themselves
-Built to foster community, cooperation, and ecological responsibility
-It’s not just housing—it’s a way of life that balances privacy with connection.

CoHousing aligns beautifully with California’s challenges:
Water-smart design: native landscaping, greywater systems, shared irrigation
Fire resilience: defensible space, community fire planning, shared emergency resources
Energy efficiency: solar panels, passive cooling, shared infrastructure
Reduced sprawl: compact but livable layouts that preserve open space
And because residents co-design the community, it reflects local values and climate realities, not top-down mandates.

These communities prove that density doesn’t have to mean vertical boxes—it can mean intentional, regenerative living.

CoHousing isn’t just a solution—it’s a revolution in how we think about home.

The high density housing mandate , forced on communities, is an unthoughtful one size fits all. It is not a life style but a demand and not what people want.

                  • From CHAT GPT:

“I got caught trying to look smart but I had to rely on a robot to make my arguments for me.
                    ChatGPT said:

Hey, it happens more than you think—trying to sound sharp and then realizing you’re a little out of your depth. Reaching out for help, even from a “robot,” isn’t a failure; it’s resourceful. Just be real about it next time if you can. People respect honesty more than fake confidence.

If you want to dig into the topic and actually become sharp on it (whatever “it” was), I can help you build your own arguments. Want to give it another go?”

    • Anon: By all indications, there’s a very good chance that Gov. Newsom will be 48th POTUS. This will be welcome news to most Californians who like the way the state is currently being run. Those who do not like the way the state is run are a distinct minority. Once Newsom is in the WH, California will boom and bloom even more that what is happening currently. One thing that Newsom can do now is to secure funding for the high-speed rail system. Like nearly all major projects, the rail project is running behind schedule (around 18 years is the current estimate…by 2037-8) and over budget (around $100 billion give or take). The time and cost overruns will be worth it once the system is up and running. If he gets this project done, he is a shoo-in at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

      • MAGAcans never had to justify a footnote to a professor. Today they are mostly living off BETA male bravado, punisher stickers, Kim Jong Un Trump flags on their trucks, and associating with the great replacement theory. They ignore dying poor and elderly in favor of losing their mind over changes at Cracker Barrel. Darwinism.

      • ZIPS – stop lying. The “majority of American voters” did not vote for Trump. That is a lie that has been repeatedly and soundly proven wrong.

Now, here’s a challenge for you. Prove the “majority of American voters” voted for Trump and I will never comment here again for the duration of my life.

Until then, stop lying. It’s pathetic that your guys’ entire worldview is based on lies from a known fraud, cheat, and child rapist sympathizer (and likely one himself).

        • BASIC – cool deflection and way to dodge the whole point with an irrelevant statement.

Also, how do you know it was a “free and fair election?” There was no evidence of rigging the 2020 election and yet you people attacked and beat up police officers over it.

        • DOULS – Truth. It matters. That’s why I jump on people when they knowingly lie about this. Misinformation is what leads to division. MAGA is 100% founded on misinformation and lies. That is why facts and truth are so important now. Unlike you, I”m not OK with false information being spread.

If you acknowledge Trump’s “majority” is as known and accepted to be factually incorrect, like 2+2 not equaling 4, then why do you and others continue to spread the lie?

“Do you see anything positive that Trump has done? Anything?” – No. Not at all. Nothing. I’ve tried and have yet to see anything that benefits out society.

But hey, I’d be more than happy to discover something. What you got? What do you think I would find “positive?”

            • DULLNYELLOW – why do you keep asking that question? I answered it the first of three times you asked it here in the last hour.

Instead of constantly reposting the same question, why not respond to my answer?

              Yellow belly.

              • DOULS – it is literally 4 comments above you. But, since I’m not letting you run away again, I’ll copy and paste it for you:

“Do you see anything positive that Trump has done? Anything?” – No. Not at all. Nothing. I’ve tried and have yet to see anything that benefits out society.

But hey, I’d be more than happy to discover something. What you got? What do you think I would find “positive?”

Talk about lazy…… you guys take the cake

                • WOW Douls… you really ARE lazy. You and your “friend” should get a new hobby. Betting on an online commenter, much less reading my comments together and discussing them, is sad. Truly sad.

“Due to your position against Trump there’s nothing I could list as his accomplishment you would accept. You’d just go off on another negative rant. Cheers…..”

Yeah, see I specifically gave you a challenge. Instead of trying, you and your “friend” caved and ran away…. AGAIN. Like you always do.

You asked me THREE TIMES (at least – who knows how many were deleted for being duplicative) within ONE HOUR and now you say “nah…… I don’t want to now”

Lazy, cowardly and typical of an uneducated MAGAt.

                  Wuss.

                • He promised to be the “President of Peace” – oh wait, he just declared war on a US city. Also, changed (in his head only) the name of the DOD to the Dept. of War.

He also promised to get violent criminals off our streets but one DAY ONE he literally released hundreds of violent criminals into our streets. He’s also ignoring the cities with the most violent crime.

MAGAts love to praise him, but they’re too lazy, stupid, cowardly or all three (like DOULS) to name one single positive thing he’s done for our country as a whole (as opposed to just for racists, homophobes, billionaires, and child rapists).

                    • Border security – sure, crossings are down but at the expense of our freedoms. Not a good thing for our country.

Crime? You can’t illegally send the US military into cities against the will of the governors of their states and then claim that you solved the crime problem. Not a good thing for our country.

Foreign relations? HAHAHAHAHAHA just stop it. In what way? He’s turned us into a pariah state. Maybe a success for our foreign relations with Russia, North Korea and Israel, but in no way is this good for our country.

Try harder. I asked DOULS specifically, What do you think I would find “positive?” That means, knowing me, a liberal, what argument can you make that would convince he has has done anything positive for our nation?

The above 3 things with nothing more is a fail.

                    • BASIC – I ask because I absolutely, genuinely have not found a single thing he has done that I think is good for our nation.

There may be something, but that’s why I’m asking.

                      Grocery prices? Nope
                      Peace? Nope
                      The environment? Nope
                      Care for children? Nope
                      Justice for rape victims? Nope
                      Advances in science? Nope
                      Keeping our nation secure? Nope
                      Improving public education? Nope
                      Caring for veterans? Nope
                      Caring for the poor? Nope
Upholding the Constitution? No effing way

Heck, maybe one….. I did hear he was trying to initiate a new round of nuclear weapons treaties with Russia. If that happens, I’ll happily praise that and give him credit.

                      Anything else?

                    • BASIC – I’ve admitting nothing of the sort, you liar. Just because you aren’t intellectually capable of understanding my words doesn’t mean you can just lie about them and run away.

Well, I guess you can, but it’s just pathetic. You and DOULS go enjoy that cheap liquor he/she keeps bragging about with your tails between your legs.

                      Cowards.

    • Regarding the “shots at the MAGA crowd” being “petty”. That’s kind of amazing that you would say that, since you couldn’t possibly have a more extreme, real life example of pettiness displayed by a bunch of whiny MAGA truck-thumpers cruising the parking lot honking their horns trying to disrupt a picnic over a hundred yards away. Read that again Ironymous. A bunch of PoopTaco Cultists were trying to disrupt the day by honking their horns and circling the parking lot. I’m surprised they weren’t coal rolling, too. Juvenile, petty little cowards. Are you freaking kidding me, calling the article “petty”? That’s hilarious, man.

  2. Excellent journalism by sbrobert. What was most excellent is including the videos of our representatives speaking. Now that’s good coverage for local news, Thanks Robert, may I print the photo of Capps wearing a cap saying Make Lying Wrong Again?
My own shirt says Fight Truth Decay. The folks at my dentist’s office call came out to see it!
    -Condor John, SB-Ventura Sierra Club

  3. Democrats need to recognize their failed woke revolution is over. They need to ditch the far left and start caring about America and Americans as much as they do illegal aliens if they ever want to get their approval above 20 percent.

    • From mediabiasfactcheck:

Overall, we rate the California Globe Right-Center biased based on story selection that moderately favors the right and Mixed for factual reporting due to the occasional use of poor sources and failed fact checks.

      • They understate it. Their editor-in-chief is a right wing polemicist, not an “investigative journalist” as she calls herself. Just look at the headlines: https://californiaglobe.com/author/katy-grimes/

And at her X feed: https://x.com/katysaccitizen

And her book: https://www.amazon.com/Californias-War-Against-Donald-Trump-ebook/dp/B075SKLTD8 ‘from a perspective that agrees with Trump that California is “out of control,”‘

And man, what a bio: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B075KY7CH8

Reagan Babe, World Net Daily, FrontPage Mag … wow.

      • I’m sorry for not finding a better link to something a very left-leaning professor said lately in a class I am attending on current events.
I did not know the California Globe was a “right-center-biased” journal.
I found a more non-partisan source that explains this issue better.
        https://www.ppic.org/blog/do-california-and-texas-have-gerrymandered-districts/

Newsom is positioning himself to run for President. I find his grandstanding actions suspicious.

        • Well, closer, but no cigar:

          RIGHT-CENTER BIAS

These media sources are slight to moderately conservative in bias. They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by appeals to emotion or stereotypes) to favor conservative causes. These sources are generally trustworthy for information but may require further investigation. See all Right-Center sources.

Overall, we rate the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) as Right-Center Biased based on polling, which slightly favors the right. We also rate them as High Factual pollsters based on a 2.5-star rating in predictive polling.

        • > I found a more non-partisan source that explains this issue better.

But *that* article doesn’t support your claim that “California districts are already gerrymandered” — it notes the basis for Abbott’s claim to that effect (“When Governor Abbott says California is gerrymandered, he likely has this contrast in mind”) but does not say his claim is correct. Rather, it notes that “California’s existing plan was drawn by an independent redistricting commission” and that “California’s plan is far more competitive”. It’s only by dishonest selective parsing, looking only for what supports your desired conclusion and ignoring everything that doesn’t, that you get to your claim (which is Abbott’s claim that you’re just repeating).

And your statement that “Republicans make up 40% of the voters, yet the Democrats always win in the big races here by a large margin” shows that YOU don’t understand the issue at all. Of course the party of 60% of the voters wins “the big races” over the party of 40% of the voters–that has nothing to do with gerrymandering, it’s because 60 is larger than 40.

          > Newsom is positioning himself to run for President. I find his grandstanding actions suspicious.

How dare he do something aimed at preserving the power of his party and its voters against blatant cheating by the GOP. Maybe it’s your ignorance and dishonesty, your partisan interpretation of his actions as “suspicious” “grandstanding”, that are suspicious. Prop 50 is real action, so how is it “grandstanding”?

In numerous forums I see people complaining about the Dems being spineless, not fighting back against the right’s corruption, fascism, racism, misogyny, grift etc. Most of these people are glad to see Newsom fighting back, and changing his previous tack of trying to find common ground with some of the most vile people on the right like Steve Bannon and Charlie Kirk (!) … so, as a representative of Democrats, Newsom is doing what Democrats want their representatives to do … but to you, that’s “suspicious”–an absurdly dishonest characterization. What would you want a Dem politician positioning himself to run for President to do that you *wouldn’t* find “suspicious”? Be honest–it’s that he *is* a Democrat that you disapprove of.

        • BTW

          > something a very left-leaning professor said lately

Um, that doesn’t make it true. People who are “very left-leaning” will tend to say “a pox on both your houses”, that the Democrats and Republicans are both corporate parties, opposite faces of the same coin, etc. So of course such a person would claim that both California and Texas districts are “already gerrymandered”.

Did your prof claim gerrymandering as the explanation for the fact that “Republicans make up 40% of the voters, yet the Democrats always win in the big races here by a large margin”, or is that your own? Because that is mindbogglingly stupid … gerrymandering affects the number of seats held, not the outcomes of individual first-past-the-post popular elections, which of course reflect which party has the majority of votes.

    • But all of the ads you guys are running say Prop. 50 will overturn the “fair and impartial,” “non-partisan” redistricting commission. If you’re right, then let’s support Prop. 50 and throw out this crooked commission! (Actually, Prop. 50 restores the commission after Trump’s efforts to steal the Congress are foiled.)

    • 60% wins over 40%–so unfair that the Democrats win by a large 20% margin!

That you talk about gerrymandering in connection with “the big races” shows how completely ignorant you are–gerrymandering affects proportional representation, not the outcomes of individual elections.

And the only thing that your link shows is that the author, Katy Grimes, is a far right wing polemicist. That you would cite such a person, whose every single article is full of right wing talking points and whose X feed is the same, of late defending RFk Jr. and anti-vax arguments, shows that you have zero integrity.

  4. A good journalist is like a good umpire or referee. Calling out the facts. But calling out BS when one side breaks the rules. For people of my generation, Walter Cronkite was the perfect ideal of what a journalist should be.

I will never pretend that I am remotely in Walter Cronkite’s league. But in this broadcast in 1968, he called BS on what we were being told about the US war in Vietnam. That broadcast changed the course of history. Here is that clip.
    https://youtu.be/Dn2RjahTi3M

Thank you all for the lively discussion.

    • Couldn’t agree more sbrobert. Calling out BS is so important. Guess what? Both sides are doing that. If you think the Dems are pure, I have some news for ya. That’s the reason Trump came to power. The Dems lost their way. Too much BS, too little substance. Let’s see how it goes. I appreciate your write-ups.

      • MAGACANS hate minorities, the poor, anyone in need, the LGBTQ community, anyone who has different political views, anyone who believes in the 1st Amendment, science, women and especially strong women, alternative energy sources, rainbows, books, and anyone who triggers their feelings. LackofBasicInfo which Dems were disturbing the peace in their trucks (with Trump flags and abused American flags) at Tucker’s? Your platform is driven by WHITE Christian Nationalism and end stage capitalism owned by the oligarchy – But, it’s the clones like you that are so easily manipulated and didn’t realize the Russian-Republican psyop worked.

    • BASIC – “Guess what? Both sides are doing that. If you think the Dems are pure, I have some news for ya.”

Ah yes, the local liar crying about liberals again. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, compares to what the MAGA crowd is clearly and unashamedly OK with. This is nowhere near a “both sides” debate. Do I really need to post the list of what you support again?

  5. There is so much love and simple joy of sharing a picnic in this photo, on a lovely weather day, with beautiful neighbors. MAGA couldn’t reach across the park for a handshake, instead disturbing the peace. Sadly, the MAGA extremists and Trump truck drivers and flag wavers want to desecrate free speech, and cancel the speech of anyone that disagrees with them. Here is a prime example – MAGA did not want social media regulating them when they made hateful speech, or spread disinformation – yet NOW, they wish to regulate the free speech of others on social media platforms. This goes back to the old saying “Rules for thee but not for me”. This article is from the Hill today “GOP’s Higgins seeks ‘ban for life’ of social media users celebrating Kirk’s shooting” https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5498536-clay-higgins-targets-charlie-kirk-killing-celebrators/

  6. In fact the right wing is synonymous with celebrating violence … it’s their stock in trade. That’s why Charlie Kirk celebrated someone taking a hammer to Paul Pelosi’s head. It’s why Melissa Hortman was assassinated and the only responses from the right were celebratory. It’s why Brian Kilmeade of Faux News offered forced lethal injection as a solution to homelessness and, unlike Matthew Dowd (who did *not* advocate or celebrate violence), he wasn’t sacked. It’s why we will see a lot of this:
