At 6:30 a.m. yesterday, deputies responded to a 911-Follow up in the 200-block of Winchester Canyon Road. A resident in the area called to report a green Ford Expedition in the roadway, resting on the driver’s side. It appeared to have driven up the right roadway embankment and then rolled down on its side. Units arrived on scene and located the empty vehicle. While deputies were checking the area for evidence, they found a deceased male subject 100 feet down a cliff side, in a creek. The creek is about 20 feet west of where the vehicle was located.

An additional witness reported talking with a subject near the vehicle in the early morning hours after the crash occurred. The subject told the witness that he was attempting to get his vehicle back on its wheels. The witness suggested that subject call for a tow truck. The subject also told the witness that he was in the area visiting family and was looking for a place to camp.

Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to the scene and used a technical rope system to raise the deceased subject up the side of a cliff to the roadway. Coroner’s detectives have identified the decedent as 36-year-old Michael Currier of Long Beach. Detectives do not suspect foul play.

"An additional witness reported talking with a subject near the vehicle in the early morning hours after the crash occurred."

Has it been confirmed the subject spoken to by the "additional witness" is the decedent?

Since they don't suspect foul play..I'd have to guess this was the same decedent from the green Expedition as opposed to any unconfirmed stealthy witness away from the hinterland of Winchester Cyn.

Yes. This is so very strange. "An additional witness reported talking with a subject near the vehicle in the early morning hours after the crash occurred. The subject told the witness that he was attempting to get his vehicle back on its wheels. The witness suggested that subject call for a tow truck. " Wow.

I wonder if he was under the influence of something? Seeing something like a vehicle in its side with a person trying to upright it should probably warrant a call to 911 if witnessed... could have saved his life and also others, if in fact they were. Why else would they not want to call a tow truck?

A number of you point out the oddness of his final moments and the suspicioun of not being in a sober frame of mind. A quick search of his name reveals quite a troubled life, including drugs.

im with you, I have been trying to figure out the how this could have happened. it almost seems like he may have slipped in the dark or tripped near the edge and fell down the cliff into the creek. very weird series of events though. Kind of reminds me of the young kid who tried to push his car alone in the middle of the night and it rolled back over him and pushed him into a culvert in goleta. RIP both.

A bunch of us who live in Winchester Canyon are trying to figure out where this is/was. It sounds like it was further up the canyon, on the "private road" part (beyond the park). More info would be welcomed.
