Monday, October 19 is the deadline to register to vote in California. Registering by this deadline ensures that voters receive all the voter material they will need. Voting in California has never been easier and registering to vote is the first step, according to Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters Joe Holland. All California residents are eligible to vote as long as they are a United States citizen and at least 18 on or before Election Day, November 3. 

There a several ways to register to vote:

  • Register online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov
  • Paper applications can be found at most U.S. Post Offices, or the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • To assist voters meet the registration deadline, County Elections Offices listed below will be open Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and during regular business hours.

What if a Voter Misses the October 19 Deadline?

Eligible citizens may use the conditional voter registration process through Election Day, available only at the County Registrar of Voters offices or a polling place to register and vote. Ballots cast conditionally will be processed once the Registrar of Voters Office has completed the voter registration verification process.

“I highly recommend that voters register by the October 19 deadline,” says Holland. “It ensures that the voter has the opportunity to receive, review and mark his or her ballot safely and securely at home. If a voter is unsure about their voter registration status or needs to change registration information like address, visit our website at sbcvote.com.”

The three county election offices are open for voting, voter registration and voter questions through Election Day, November 3.

    8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, except holidays
  • Lompoc, 401 E. Cypress St, Room 102
    8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, except holidays
    NOTE: To better serve voters, the Lompoc Office will move to the Lompoc Veteran’s Memorial Building at 100 E. Locust starting October 22, 2020.

  • Santa Maria, 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Suite 134
    8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, except holidays


Ballot Tracker

Voters can sign up for ballot tracking at https://california.ballottrax.net/voter/ to get automatic notifications by text message (SMS), email, or voice message about the status of your vote-by-mail ballot. Voters will be notified once the local Elections Office has received the ballot, once it has been counted, and if there are any issues with the ballot.

Ballot Drop Box Locations

Secure ballot drop boxes are located throughout the county to return voted ballots 24 hours a day until 8 p.m., November 3. The locations of ballot drop boxes were selected based on the following criteria:

  • Geographic distribution throughout the county
  • Where possible, placed in locations in areas not covered by Polling Place locations
  • Proximity to underserved voter population and lower permanent Vote by Mail registered populations

Deadline to Register to Vote is THIS Monday, October 19

Anyone else having a problem getting their ballots? I am on file to permanently receive an absentee ballot, and have been since it became an option. Since 1968 I have always received my ballot on time. This year, however, the household in which I live which has seven registered voters, all permanently on file to get an absentee ballot, and only three of them received their ballots. The other four of us received our sample ballots and notification of our permanent absentee status. Why 3 out of 7 people in a household, 6 with the same last name would get their ballots and the others did not is not understood. When I checked the status of the missing ballots, the link said that the ballots were "Sent to the USPS on 10/5". After that, they do not know. I called the registrar's office and a very nice, polite, helpful young lady could not explain why, since once it goes to the USPS, it's their responsibility to get it to us. My guess is that 15 days later, it is not their intention to do so, or some other unusual thing has happened. Four requests for duplicate absentee ballots were mailed to us (four days) and we have to sign them an return them. I am hand-delivering them to the clerk's office, as time is running out. It may be innocent, or a coincidence, but in 52 years of voting my spidey sense is wondering why THIS election? I have noticed substantial slowdown in SB mail - most things take a week these day within town. Three of the four persons in this case are disabled, and I am 73 without a car. Are we the only ones? I'm glad this is not a swing state, but am just a little freaked out nonetheless.
