I came across what I thought looked like the Darth Vader of mushrooms yesterday. Helvella lacunosa, also called Black Elfin Saddle mushroom.

Feb 05, 2023 06:18 PMI've seen those in No. Cal, but never here. There are many more varieties of mushroom coming up than usual, due to our bountiful rain. But that means that the mycelium for these mushrooms was already present in the ground, which is kind of mysterious. Can it survive for many years and then just produce the above ground mushroom when the conditions are right for reproduction? Any experts out there know what the scoop is?
