Infamous Santa Barbara landlord, Dario Pini, was featured in a new KCET investigative report.

Titled as the "Coastal Housing Crisis: Substandard of Living," SoCal Connected's Deepa Fernandes met with Pini and his lawyer, along with Santa Barbara City officials and attorney Ariel Calonne.

According to Fernandes, Pini referred to himself as a savior of Santa Barbara's working class, while the City and many tenants prefer to call him Santa Barbara's slumlord as Pini faces over $8 million in fines and penalties.

Fernandes toured properties with Pini and then visited properties without Pini, to which he showed up and confronted the reporter.

Don't know him, but do know that if you live in group housing, you are at the mercy of the lowest of the group. Cockroaches, fleas and all the other creepy-crawlies don't just stay with people who don't clean, bash out screens, and leave food or food containers to rot in place. Same goes for plumbing. If someone flushes nappies, Kotex, paper towels down the toilet, your unit will get backed up too. As for wiring, if nobody is stealing that and copper plumbing to sell, it should work if the circuit isn't being overloaded.

You can justify dirt, rats and cockroaches and blame tenants but unsafe electrical fire hazards are the responsibility of the owner/landlord. As are leaking toilets, leaking roofs and other structural problems.

Pini, the City & County are tight. He will never pay the 8 million because they know he brings in boatloads of property taxes for their coffers. This is typical politics just like the current "SAD" state of affairs going on in our nation's capital.

I want to know who this guy pissed off. Because the truth is, I’ve rented some questionable places and the landlords were not thIs guy. He’s just one of many.

We're landlords. As one guy said to me, when I told him I was planning to rent part of my property: "Ugh, renters." He really said it all. Pini is definitely no saint, but renters can often be slobs, property-damagers and must be monitored if one wants to keep his/her property nice. Tenants aren't all angels, that's for sure. Rats come to where the food is. Cockroaches are the same. You can't blame Pini for tenants who don't or won't keep their environment clean of pest attractants.

It is that attitude right there that is the problem. You can be as squeaky clean as can be, but when there is structural damage and sub-par appliances it is a haven for termites, cockroaches, pests and dry rot. Pini is a disgrace and you certainly CAN blame him, your landlordness on high. Geez! The proof is in the pudding when it comes to Pini, this guy is about maxing out his money and renting horrific dumps to poor people and he is taking advantage of them during a housing crisis. Pathetic.

As a renter, what should I do about the termites, rot, leaking roof, and plumbing insufficiencies, your landlordness?

" sounds like the county is finally very serious about this issue." Haha. The County has been "serious" about Pini for decades. Amazing that nothing is ever done about him aside from a few fines and a wee bit of jail time. What I ponder is how 14 to an apartment manage to organize their bathroom time. How DO they doo-doo it?

Absolutely fascinating. Thank you for posting this video. How anyone can justify Pini's behavior in any way is beyond me. I particularly like the part near the end when he calls out the KCET reporter for "fake news." Yeah, who am I going to believe, Dario Pini or my lyin' eyes?

I agree that his properties do need some help but honestly to all of you that only want the elitist of the elite living next you in your ultra gentrified neighborhoods, who the hell is going to provide services to you when you have squeezed the working class out? I almost want to see it happen.

it is always amusing to listen to Dario Pini paint himself as the savior of the immigrants and low income residents! There is no one who can ethically or morally say that Dario is actually in compliance, is treating these poor with respect and not endangering their health! Dario is a very wealthy man who is earning a lot of his wealth by taking advantage of these people. Rats, black mold, cockroaches, sewage spills, unsafe electrical and multiple fire hazards... the list goes on and on. It sounds like the county is finally very serious about this issue. It will be interesting to see how this resolves itself: Jail, confiscation of properties, major fines or a combination of these.
