New nonstop flights from Santa Barbara Airport to Chicago began April 6, 2026, marking the return of a popular route connecting the Central Coast to the Midwest.
The flight on the route is operated by United Airlines using a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft with 166 seats. The service to this route is expected to improve cross-country connectivity. This daily service is operated from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The inaugural flight departed near full capacity, reflecting strong early demand. Airport officials, tourism representatives, and airline partners gathered at the terminal for a welcome event.
The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce also welcomed arriving passengers with a pop-up visitor booth at the airport.

This route had previously operated as a seasonal service during the summers of 2021 and 2022, and its return restores a direct link to one of the nation’s busiest airline hubs.
Airport Director Chris Hastert described the route as one of the most requested by the local community, noting that it strengthens national connectivity and expands travel options.
Kathy Janega-Dykes said the service is expected to support both tourism and business travel, identifying Chicago as a key Midwest gateway.
Passengers arriving on the inaugural flight were greeted with decorations, complimentary gifts, and handmade cookies, along with welcome activities hosted by local officials and tourism partners.
