CSPAN Emergency Alert

Our tv switched itself to CSPAN this morning at 11:20. I couldn't change channels, or turn the sound up/down, or tv off, for one minute. Did anyone have a similar experience this morning?

We have had this problem when we assume there's some sort of emergency testing going on. We've asked Cox why our tv changes itself to CSPAN and receive no message whatsoever.

Is this some sort of glitch in the system? We know there was supposed to be a nationwide FEMA test at 11:20. Did anyone get a notification like ours, or any notification?

CSPAN Emergency Alert

When there's an emergency alert, is the station supposed to change to another station, or stay the same place? I'm sure it's not supposed to go to CSPAN, but what is it supposed to do? It would be nice to know.

Is this only a Cox issue, or do other cable tv providers also send your tv to CSPAN during an emergency alert?

OP, I was in a doctor's waiting room watching KEYT's 11AM broadcast. I don't think it was on Channel 3, I'm pretty sure it was the other simulcast and rebroadcast channel (Cox 13). An emergency alert tone did occur, as well as a scrolling message near the top of the screen. Within minutes after the test, the TV changed to CSPAN. (I also heard the alert at 11:50 AM and 12:20 PM on other TVs around the clinic, LOL.). My TV at home changed itself to CSPAN a few weekends ago, but I don't recall if there were any flash flood alerts that day.

I guess this is the stuff you worry about when your life is watching tv at 11:20am on a Wednesday. Must be nice.

LUCKY777, did you get this on your tv, or something else? If tv, what area are you in, central S.B., or elsewhere. Maybe it's an issue of just a certain area.

The message I got was "If this were a real National Emergency, this would not be the place to come for advice."

FCC, EAS (Emergency Alert System) https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/emergency-alert-system-eas. This is why it’s important for our EAS to __work correctly in S.B.__: "The Emergency Alert System is a national public warning system that __requires__ TV and radio broadcasters, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service providers, direct broadcast satellite service providers and wireline video service providers to offer to the President the communications capability to address the American public during a national emergency."

I have had this problem several times in the past few weeks. It occurs as I am watching something else. Then I cannot get off the channel and have to reboot the system. I thought it was another failure of my aging cable box but apparently not. Thanks for sharing this so I can feel better about that at least.

Nobody seems to understand this, certainly not Cox support. It seems to be a part of the Emergency Response System. Maybe Cox gave the government agency the wrong channel number. This channel shift used to send the TV to the Weather Channel. Re the national emergency system test that occurred yesterday (Wed) at 11:20, I got it on the car radio (99.9 FM), but nothing on my cell phone. It's amazing that there is so little reliable information regarding this system.

Salud Carbajal, Federal Representative for Santa Barbara. Please ask your staff to look into this. If FEMA is testing our emergency alert system, why aren't we getting the message delivered on tv that it is a nationwide test? Federal.

Please, some official tell us (EOC or other) what is supposed to happen? Are we being directed wrongly to CSPAN. My friend was in a car and got the emergency broadcast with a message. On tv, there was no message, nothing...just CSPAN. If this is a glitch, officials, please get after it!

I was upset. I had to get up off the couch, go find the remote and figure out how to put the TV back on Fox News. Very unnerving to find CSPAN on my TV.

I was wondering why my tv was on that station when I got home yesterday, which isn't one I've ever watched! It was a bunch of politicians talking about the new proposed tax laws. Maybe it was something the cable company was trying to encourage people to watch. All it did was confuse and stress me out!
