An unusual parking maneuver at the California Highway Patrol office in Santa Barbara led to a DUI arrest after a driver pulled into the lot at an angle described by officials as “creative parking.”

According to CHP, the vehicle entered the parking lot irregularly and failed to remain within the designated lines, cutting across a marked stall before coming to rest partially over a curb and into a landscaped area.

Instead of pulling straight into a parking stall, the driver crossed through the space and stopped with the vehicle partially on the curb.

Officers approached the vehicle shortly after it stopped. Following contact with the driver, an arrest was made.

After officers observed signs of impairment, they conducted a DUI investigation. The driver was subsequently booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Other Recent DUI Cases

In a separate case, a driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a head-on collision in Santa Maria. The crash occurred at Elm Street and Donovan Road on February 21, 2026.

Officials said one vehicle was traveling eastbound on Donovan Road when it veered into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming vehicle. Minor injuries were reported. The suspected impaired driver was taken into custody and booked at the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s North County Jail.

On January 21, 2026, officers responded to a two-vehicle collision at Wentworth Street and West Cota Street in Santa Barbara. While en route, they were flagged down near San Pascual Street and Del Monte Avenue regarding a second crash involving injuries.

In light of these incidents, officials continue to warn about the dangers of impaired driving, noting that alcohol, certain medications, and other substances can interfere with safe vehicle operation.

While marijuana is legal in California for medicinal and recreational use, driving under its influence remains illegal.

Impaired driving continues to be a concern locally. According to 2023 data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, Santa Barbara recorded 197 DUI arrests, ranking 72nd out of 103 comparable jurisdictions.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a first-time DUI offense can cost a driver thousands of dollars in fines, fees, and legal expenses, in addition to potential license suspension. Local enforcement efforts are supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
