A multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 101 near Nipomo caused major traffic delays Monday afternoon, with several people transported to local hospitals.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported around 3:57 p.m. near the southbound Tefft Street off-ramp. Authorities said at least four vehicles were involved in the crash.
Cal Fire reported that one of the vehicles broke through a fence and came to rest on a frontage road.
As a result of the crash, the No. 1 lane of southbound Highway 101 was temporarily closed, causing significant traffic delays that extended into Arroyo Grande. Both southbound and northbound traffic experienced slowdowns.
By 5:32 p.m., the California Highway Patrol reported that all lanes of Highway 101 had reopened. Caltrans traffic cameras later showed traffic flowing normally south of the Tefft Street area.
Authorities urged drivers to continue exercising caution while traveling through the area as traffic returned to normal.

In a separate incident last week, two people suffered moderate to major injuries in a vehicle fire on Highway 41, prompting a full closure of the roadway. According to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Highway 41 East at Olive Ranch, near the transition to Highway 46 East.
Due to the severity of the injuries, a helicopter landed directly on the highway to transport both patients to a hospital.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a major traffic collision and confirmed the location. Highway 41 remained closed in both directions as firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and law enforcement managed the scene.

Officials also said that vehicle crashes are avoidable events. Alcohol-related crashes are preventable and drivers should make conscious choices. Further urging to never drink and drive and donot ride with someone who has been drinking, with remaining responsible every time they get behind the wheel.
