Has anyone else seen a coyote on Alta Mesa (Isleta Ave) early Saturday morning ?
A coyote came to the front door and grabbed our cat. Please be aware. We are crushed. RIP Jack

What a horrible thing, to have your cat killed in that way. I am so sorry you are going through this. However: All cat owners should be aware that if they allow their cats to be outside, unsupervised, day or night, those cats run the risk of being killed —– whether it be by coyote or vehicle or maybe even due to scavenging animals that have ingested poison bait.
Many, many years ago I canvassed for a local politician. While going door to door in various parts of Santa Barbara, I noticed how many cats could be seen, as the cats sat outside in driveways or on porches, waiting for their owners to come home. So many cats. It was truly amazing. Easy pickings for predators.
I can often tell when there is a new cat-owning renter or homeowner in my neighborhood, because there will suddenly be some unknown, but non-feral cat, hunting in my yard. Cats kill MILLIONS of songbirds and who knows how many other small animals, EVERY YEAR in the US. If you leave your cat outside on its own, it will hunt and kill. And it may very well, in turn, become food for some other predator.
I know how much it hurts to “lose” a beloved pet. But maybe with your next cat, you will decide to keep it as an indoor pet. RIP Jack.
Coyotes live all over Alta Mesa, it is their home too. That’s very sad and horrifying to witness, but unfortunately not surprising.
I am sorry for your loss, but agree here with Minibeast. Free roaming cats have not only terrorized the bird population, but killed so many birds that some have gone extinct because of this. Laws need to be past to keep this from continuing to happen to protect the bird population which is vital to the ecosystem. Many cat owners are not aware of this and I wonder if this was the case here as well. I am sure it is a shock to all over sudden loose your pet and I am sorry this happened to you, but please also be aware that you are responsible for your cats very unfortunate and likely horrible death due to your poor decisions.
” likely horrible death due to your poor decisions.” what a horrible thing to say to someone who just lost a pet.
Not too many cat owners aren’t aware of the dangers the world presents. Coyotes are around, and reported sightings can help us keep our cats indoors during the most dangerous times. Or in this case, in dangerous neighborhods where danger hours are even longer than in other neighborhoods. My cat would be miserable if she could not climb trees etc and was stuck inside all day. She has every right to be outdoors, and I even believe she has stopped the habit of chasing birds, although lizards are still fair game. So please – sensible compassionate people, continue to report coyote and fox sightings and the time of day so we can care for our pets in the manner they will be most happy. RIP Jack
