A federal jury has found Cox Communications liable to pay $1 billion to music labels and publishers over piracy infringement.

Last summer over 50 music companies filed a lawsuit accusing Cox of ignoring infringement notices for allowing customers to illegally download music.

Sony Music, Warner Music Group, EMI, and Universal Music Group were just a few named in the lawsuit accusing the telecom company of ignoring the piracy of more than 10,000 musical works.

“Cox received hundreds of thousands of notices of infringement and did not adequately respond or comply with its obligations to stop its subscribers from infringing on peer to peer networks,” the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) said.

Cox plans to appeal the decision and called the liability payment “unjust” and “excessive.”

“We provide customers with a powerful tool that connects to a world full of content and information. Unfortunately, some customers have chosen to use that connection for wrongful activity,” the company said in a statement.

Other telecom companies such as Charter Communications and RCN have similar lawsuits pending against them.

  1. Shouldn’t allow downloads? OK? What in the heck do you think the internet is? Just for checking email? Don’t you know that using services such as Netflix, your email, even browsing are all downloading info? My goodness some are out of touch!
