We just got an email from Quest Diagnostics offering a Covid test for $119+ $10 for the doctor.

Many of us have insurance, but what about those who don't? How can they afford that?

It's free to get tested at the State-Run Community Testing locations. They will bill your insurance if you have it otherwise the State of California will pick up the tab: https://publichealthsbc.org/testing/

Unfortunately the only testing site is in Santa Maria, first come first serve for reservations for the following day.... Had a friend, without insurance, get tested, the lowest price he could find was $140 at Walgreens. Talking with people in other states, it's much different. Either insurance pays or it's free, no hassle, just show up get tested and leave.

Hi MountainMan, if you go to LHI health online, you will see that there are numerous testing locations throughout Santa Barbara, Goleta, and the Santa Ynez Valley - all of which are free if one does not have insurance.

Also Oxnard, if you're closer to Rincon/Carp Valley. No issues crossing county lines. Easy to schedule, got results via online portal in less than 24 hours.

Thank you for the info! I wish it was more readily available - the info - for people to find. My friend already parted with some of his savings to get tested.

I continue to wonder why asymptomatic people would even want a test, given it is only good as of the date taken? Unless you need it for travel, or some other specific reason, what would you do with the result, positive or negative?

Let’s face it, 8 months into the pandemic, the testing situation in SB County stinks. By now you should be able to drive up to any high school or Earl Warren parking lot and get tested for free from your car in 5 minutes, with the results texted to you in less than 24 hours.

For free? Nothing in life is free. Those services are expensive and they cost a bundle. In LA the firefighters are doing the testing supplies and charging overtime for it. Millions of $$. Free? Sheesh.

Don't bother getting tested and keep wearing the mask and being smart...if you don't have the money for the test.

This was someone who had traveled recently and was wanting to make sure that they didn't bring anything with them, so they could move forward. Masks are being worn. I have known about 12 different people that have come down sick over the last few months... and they have all tested negative, all mask wearers. The only person I know who has tested positive was a relative in Colorado, who came down with a fever, the same time her 12 year old son came down with a fever. She tested positive, son tested negative. Both are fine and out of the woods.

Not sure why anyone discourages people from getting tested. There is no down side in getting tested. Ideally, we would all be getting tested weekly. More testing gives the public health more information about community spread. We should be trying to identify all the asymptomatic carriers in the community? LHI (www.lhi.care) is free and results are currently available within 48hrs. It takes a few days to get an appointment but it's quick and easy.
Everyone should do it and do it often.

Many epidemiologists say that at this point in the pandemic the virus is so prevalent within out community we shouldn't waste resources with mass testing and focus instead on protecting/isolating the vulnerable populations, taking care of those that get sick, and contact tracing. Contact tracing is something that is so important but the State completely dropped the ball on (similar to our state's horrific EDD issues and failure to reopen schools). After over 60 million positive cases, the Obama administration stopped testing for H1N1 for the same reason.

Getting tested is only useful for people doing contact tracing and quarantining. Testing without those is like a tripod with one leg, not stable at all. And as good Americans, we would never let anyone trace us or get our contact info by tracking our phones. Mask wearing has very little to do with getting infected. Nurses get infected wearing full PPE, so a mask does not save you from getting infected. It is useful if you are infected because it helps to prevent you from spreading it as efficiently to other people.

Contract tracing is only as effective as the testing. Test --> Contact Trace --> Quarantine all close contacts. That's how you prevent spread. Only testing symptomatic people misses large swaths of asymptomatic spreaders. The State has definitely dropped the ball on contact tracing and I would say the County has as well. I personally know people that have tested positive and never been contacted for contact tracing by the County. I also know people waiting to be contact tracers that have not been utilized. A large scale organized testing and contact tracing program (like you see in Korea, Japan, etc.) never happened in the US. This is where the Federal government failed. Instead, it's easier to shut down the economy.

Mountainman, many of the down votes are automatic from a few select users based on your username and prior posts, not on the actual post being downvoted. No person who actually contributes/encourages a positive discussion would downvote your 9:01 post.

These tests (PCR) have a super high false negative rate unless you test with symptoms. The best they can do is three days after symptoms start. Even then they still have a 20% false negative rate. https://www.acpjournals.org/na101/home/literatum/publisher/acp/journals/content/aim/2020/aim.2020.173.issue-4/m20-1495/20200821/images/medium/m201495ff2_figure_2_probability_of_having_a_negative_rt-pcr_test_result_given_sars-cov-2_infecti.jpg

Fauci said if you want to get tested after "close contact" with a known infected person, Go 3 days and then 11 days after the contact. By then 97% of infected people will start to test positive if they are infected.
