In celebration of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 25, Registrar of Voters Joe Holland encourages Santa Barbara County residents to exercise their right as citizens and make sure they are registered to vote for the upcoming General Election.

To register to vote in California, you must be:

  • A United States citizen,
  • A resident of California,
  • 18 years of age or older on Election Day,
  • Not currently imprisoned or on parole for the conviction of a felony (for more information on the rights of people who have been incarcerated, please see the Secretary of State’s Voting Rights for Californians with Criminal Convictions or Detained in Jail or Prison), and
  • Not currently found to be mentally incompetent by a court of law.

Registering to vote is simple. Eligible citizens can register online at the Secretary of State’s website at registertovote.ca.gov.

In addition, most libraries, post offices, and DMV offices have voter registration forms, and eligible citizens can register in person at the County Registrar of Voters offices at:

Santa Barbara: 4440‐A Calle Real (corner of Calle Real and Honor Farm Rd)

Santa Maria: 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Suite 134

The deadline to register to be eligible to vote in the upcoming November 6 General Election is Monday, October 22.

A voter must re-register if his/her name or residence address has changed. Registration status can be verified at the Registrar of Voters website www.sbcvote.com  by clicking the Voter Registration Lookup link.

National Voter Registration Day is a one‐day effort by volunteer citizens, businesses and organizations to create awareness of voter registration and voting. National Voter Registration Day was started in 2012, and is held every fourth Tuesday in September—before voter registration deadlines nationwide—and is designed to remind and encourage eligible Americans to prepare to exercise their most basic civil right, their right to vote.
