Cottage Urges Pregnant Women to Get Vaccinated

Expectant mothers and their newborns are at greater risk of health complications if the mother contracts COVID during pregnancy, and an infectious disease specialist at Cottage Health wants to be sure new parents and parents-to-be have the information they need to protect their family.

With the highly contagious Delta variant circulating, Cottage Health is urging women who are or may become pregnant to take precautions and get the COVID vaccine.

“As more data becomes available, we’ve seen that the vaccine is safe during pregnancy and helps to protect both mother and baby from complications of COVID,” said Dr. David Fisk, Medical Director of Infection Control at Cottage Health and an infectious disease specialist at Sansum Clinic.

“The risk for complications during pregnancy and childbirth increases dramatically when COVID is involved,” Dr. Fisk added.

Data from thousands of women enrolled in research studies shows that those who got COVID were 15 times more likely to die from the disease compared to women who were not pregnant, and they were 22 times more likely to deliver prematurely. In addition to protecting the mother, the vaccine may offer an additional layer of protection for her newborn. “Recent studies show that the breast milk of lactating mothers vaccinated against COVID-19 contain antibodies that may help protect nursing infants from the COVID-19 illness,” said Dr. Steven Barkley, Chief Pediatric Medical Officer at Cottage Children’s Medical Center.

“COVID vaccination is strongly encouraged for pregnant and lactating individuals,” Dr. Fisk said, “and it’s recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.”

  1. Anti Vaxxers will have no place in this world. Will be barred from work, school, activities, concerts, restaurants etc. Meanwhile normal logical people will be enjoying life. Should have to show vaccine status and be charged higher taxes if unvaccinated and either not be able to receive insurance – or extremely elevated premiums. Your Youtube video or meme does not outweigh facts. Nativism populism is for those unworthy of critical thinking and incapable of education.

  2. GT: The anti-vaxers should pay a price for sure. Everyone should be vaccinated who wants to be vaccinated, and everyone should want to get vaccinated. I shudder to think what is going to happen if Newsom loses the recall election and Larry “The Sage of South Central” Elder is elected. Elder has stated that one of the first thing he’ll do is cancel all laws/mandates regarding the wearing of masks or requiring the jab, the poke, the vaccine. To be fair, he also said he’d declare an official water emergency and a power emergency.

  3. There’s no point in trying to change anybody’s mind on EdHat, and I certainly respect everyone’s right to make a decision. What is not respectable, however, is the idea that it’s okay to restrict a person’s right to make a decision pertaining to their personal health care. That is such a private and inalienable right, and so many people are so quick to dismiss it and say things like “[People] should have to show vaccine status and be charged higher taxes if unvaccinated and either not be able to receive insurance – or extremely elevated premiums.” I find it utterly shocking, no matter what your personal decision may be. Read George Orwell for pete’s sake! And, listen to Dr. Robert Malone – the guy that invented the vaccine, who still works for the Department of Defense, and who says that he would never endorse mass vaccinations, and strongly advises against the covid vaccine for young people and pregnant mothers. We have witnessed the most massive disinformation campaign in the history of our country.

  4. It’s disappointing to see so many disparaging comments attacking others on edhat. I understand why we resort to labelling others but I would hope we can rise above this destructive tendency. If not because of the ethical questions, because it’s highly ineffective. We should also look at whether calling somebody “pro/anti” and threatening segregation is helping further our respective causes. We should support each other, show compassion, provide education and discourse regardless of our personal beliefs. The negativity is furthering the divide and causing others to dig in their heels more.
There is defined and undefined risk from getting covid (for pregnant women for both them and their baby)

^Everybody should make their own choice based on the information they have available and (if they choose) by consulting their trusted health professionals. Our responsibility as a society is to give them as much information as possible, give them access to healthcare and support our citizens. To mandate or dictate how they pursue their own health is an overstep. To insult or attack them is counterproductive (and many would argue.. completely unethical)
This woman spoke out nicely against mandates recently. Personally I’m all for personal choice and I think the vaccines are an incredible tool and resource but mandates and segregation are dangerous precedents.

  5. Agreed, no issue trying to change anyone’s mind here or on any other internet forum, or hell even in real life. If someone chooses to be selfish and disregard hundreds of thousands of scientists, researchers, and epidemiologists worldwide for a solitary Dr that no one gives much credence to then by all means. It’s your right to not get the vaccine, it’s America. It’s also American businesses owners and operator’s rights to restrict your unvaxxed butt from their services. Disinformation? Please. I’m embarrassed you call yourself a PitLocal with the crap you’re spewing.

  6. YOUDOWN – Who is “threatening segregation?” You can’t discriminate or segregate based on a choice. This is a smack in the face to those who truly have been segregated and discriminated against for an attribute over which they have no control. Shameful to even suggest that.
Treating someone different for a CHOICE they make, is NOT discrimination or segregation. If I get a face tattoo of a giant phallus, I’m probably never going to be hired as an attorney or doctor or bank teller or ice cream salesman. Choices have consequences. You choose to refuse taking actions to protect your fellow citizens, you must also face the consequences. No indoor dining, no bars, etc.
Pick up those bootstraps and accept personal responsibility. Isn’t that what people always say?

  7. I have lost any and all compassion for uneducated and aggressive idiots refusing to do a simple and basic thing to protect my children who cannot receive the vaccine yet. And I hope this isn’t your first time on the internet, these heated exchanges are not isolated to edhat. Check facebook, instagram, youtube, twitter, nextdoor, etc etc etc and you’ll read the same thing. There are educated and reasonable people and those that are not who refuse to get the vaccine.

  8. “To insult or attack them is counterproductive” – You’re right YOUDOWN, it is useless. That is why we need to keep them away from certain places and people. You choose to ignore established science, fine, but you don’t get to go into indoor venues or send your kids to school with my kids. We will never change their minds, so we just need to move on and live life without them. Sadly, many of them won’t be around much longer anyway.
