  1. For a preview of what’s to come, one only needs to look at the numbers coming out of England. Public Health England has a number of technical briefings they’ve release over the past month that cover the impact the Delta variant is having (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/investigation-of-novel-sars-cov-2-variant-variant-of-concern-20201201). The briefing numbers and dates are as follows: Briefing 15 (June 11), 16 (June 18), 17 (June 25) and 19 (July 9). Noteworthy are the deaths from the Delta variant, broken down by vaccination status. Initially the unvaccinated made up the largest percentage of deaths attributed to the Delta variant, at 55%, with the fully vaccinated being 29% of those deaths and the partially vaccinated at 17%. One month later the partially vaccinated have held steady at just over 17% of the deaths, but the fully vaccinated and unvaccinated have switched places—unvaccinated are only 36% of the deaths while the fully vaccinated are now 46% of the deaths. If you look at the trend, week to week you can see the reversal. Here it is for the unvaccinated over the month: 54.8%, 46.6%, 37.6%, 35.8%. Now look at the fully vaccinated: 28.6%, 35.6%, 42.7%, 45.9%. Most of the deaths are in the over 50 years category, as when this pandemic first started. If our leaders react to this data the same way they did back in early 2020, expect to be locked down again with mask mandates by the fall, regardless of vaccination status.

  2. Simply, If vaxed and unvaxed wear masks indoors in all public places it would help slow down the virus. Due to increased cases, LA has requested masks indoors.
Warning that fully vaccinated may be spreading Delta variant as cases rise across US
Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told Insider that the spread of the Delta variant could actually be worse than current data suggests.
“CDC guidance is not to test the vaccinated [unless they’re symptomatic], so we’re probably missing a bunch of transmission in vaccinated individuals,” Mr Murray said, who is the lead modeller at the IHME, which the White House has leaned on when making pandemic policies.

CDC is making the same mask mistake they did when the pandemic started.
Researchers have found more evidence that coronavirus was circulating at low levels across the United States as early as December 2019 — weeks before the first officially reported cases.
Frozen blood samples indicate people in five states — Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Massachusetts — were infected with coronavirus days or weeks before any cases were officially reported in those states.
Volunteers taking part in the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us study, an ongoing effort to gather health information on 1 million people, donated blood as part of the study. Tests of 24,000 samples taken in early 2020 showed antibodies to coronavirus in the blood of at least nine people, the All of Us researchers reported in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Help slow down the delta virus, mask up indoors where people gather.

  3. Masks are advised in hospitals, senior care facilities, busses and planes for the protection of others. At this point everyone that can should be vaccinated… so yeah unless you are going to a hospital or senior facility it’s silly. Using your logic we’re going to be masking for the rest of our lives as the flu is also quite deadly.
Get vaccinated and ditch your mask… it’s really quite simple. But sure save one for all the time you spend at the hospital… which is how often for most?

  4. Marcel – It is your choice to wear a mask everywhere… just like it’s your choice not to get the vaccine. Both are silly choices that are more reflective of a narrow and politicized world view. As per the cdc today, fully vaccinated don’t need masks, and the few settings where they are required are for others. And it’s a narrow few scenarios that most people aren’t encountering in their day to day life.

  5. And presumably the only reason they suggest/require masks in these settings is they don’t know who’s been vaccinated… so it’s easier to just mandate that you wear a mask on a bus or plane then go through the hassle of coming up with a vaccine id mandate that would obviously ruffle some feathers. You can obviously use that to justify masking forever if you would like… but like the anti-vax campaign, it’s truly silly. Still masked up while driving alone 1212pm?

  6. Were you one of the people pushing schools closed for the whole year… directly against CDC and WHO guidelines?
And the CDC is saying fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks in most settings (and pretty much every setting a local sb edhatter would find themselves in)… so what are you pushing here (other than more anti-cdc guidelines)? Get the vaccine… and once you do (as per the cdc!) you are good to go!!!!

  7. Intelligent people should ignore fundamentally dishonest people who say it’s your choice while at the same time demonizing and misrepresenting you. And ignoring them should go beyond this issue, because that fundamental dishonesty–a corrupt moral core–manifests in other areas as well.

  8. “Thus, variant Delta spread is associated with an escape to antibodies targeting non-RBD and RBD Spike epitopes.” (Ref. 1) This quote is from a peer-reviewed paper just published online in the prestigious journal Nature on July 8, 2021. They continue, “Our results demonstrate that the emerging variant Delta partially but significantly escapes neutralizing mAbs, and polyclonal antibodies elicited by previous SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination.” The New York Times (Ref. 2) summaries a few of the recent evaluations of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against the delta variant, with varying outcomes: 88% (Britain), 87% (Canada), 79% (Scotland), 64% (Israel). This data, combined with the staggeringly large number of deaths of fully vaccinated individuals in England, is why Los Angeles is restoring the mask mandate for everyone, including the vaccinated. I expect that Santa Barbara Public Health is evaluating whether to follow suit.
