Residents of Santa Barbara County are in for a significant change in weather this week following a sweltering weekend where temperatures soared to the high 90s. A
ccording to the National Weather Service (NWS), a dramatic cooldown is in store for Southern California, starting Monday with highs expected to dip into the low 70s, accompanied by gusty coastal and desert winds throughout the afternoon and evening.
The drop in temperatures will continue into Tuesday, with the NWS forecasting highs in the high 60s and predicting the reformation of the marine layer that will bring drizzle and cooler air extending through the entire week. This shift ushers in a period of low clouds and fog, particularly in the valleys, which could see minimal sunlight and slow clearing.
Inland areas and the far interior will experience slightly warmer conditions, with temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to low 80s. However, coastal regions should brace for damp and cloudy days, with stubborn beach clouds keeping temperatures in the mid-50s to 60s. Each morning through the weekend, the marine layer is expected to increase its influence, potentially causing misting and reduced visibility, which may impact morning travel.
Furthermore, a wind advisory is now in effect across southwestern Santa Barbara County and the Santa Ynez Mountains until 9 AM Tuesday. The winds, blowing northwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph and isolated gusts reaching 60 mph, pose risks such as blowing debris, downed tree limbs, and power outages. The NWS also warns of hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles like big rigs and motorhomes.
Residents are urged to secure any loose objects and exercise additional caution on the roads during this period. The NWS has indicated there might be a brief respite from the winds late Monday morning into the afternoon, but they are expected to pick up again later in the day.
As the week progresses, locals can expect more consistent weather with minimal day-to-day change after the initial cooldown, stabilizing by mid-week as the seasonal weather pattern takes hold.
Stay tuned to local weather updates and take preparedness actions as recommended by authorities during this cooler and windy period.
