The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara will begin construction at 80 North Patterson Avenue in Goleta, California the week of July 22, 2024.
The new development, to be called Patterson Point, is located on the East side of North Patterson Avenue adjacent to Northbound Highway 101 off-ramp. Construction is anticipated to last approximately nine months.
Patterson Point will be comprised of 23 studio apartments with one manager unit, a community room and kitchen, and laundry facilities for formerly homeless residents.

The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara was formed in 1941 by Resolution of the County Board of Supervisors. The Board appoints the Housing Authority’ seven-member Board of Commissioners, although it operates as a stand-alone public agency. In furtherance of its mission, the Housing Authority has an associated 501c3 nonprofit, Surf Development Company. HASBARCO currently owns and manages more than 1,450 affordable rental housing units in Santa Barbara County, including six permanent supportive housing developments. $15,000,000 for 23 studio apartments is a waste of taxpayer money. At a measly 5% return on the 15 million they could have subsided housing for 23 individuals to the tune of $2700 for month in perpetuity.
That is an interesting thought. But is there housing available for those theoretical subsidies? Isn’t part of the problem that there are not enough apartments available? (Either too many people for the existing housing stock, or housing stock removed from the rental market because it has been converted to short-term vacation rentals.)
