On July 25, 2025, Congressman Salud Carbajal honored John Gherini during a session in the U.S. House of Representatives for his dedicated service as President of the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library (SBMAL).
Gherini’s remarkable tenure, which spanned thirty-seven years, concluded on January 17, 2025, leaving a lasting legacy in historical preservation.
Founded in 1967, SBMAL stands as a crucial educational and cultural resource, housing an extensive collection of records, documents, and artifacts from California’s Mission Era. The Archive-Library is celebrated for its role in representing the diverse narratives of California’s peoples—Native Americans, Latinos, and Anglos—and is regarded as an indispensable institution within the state. Professor Emeritus Robert Senkewicz of Santa Clara University has noted its importance in safeguarding these essential histories.
“John Gherini’s influence has been pivotal in enhancing the resources of the Archive-Library,” said Congressman Carbajal. “His ability to navigate legal complexities and build relationships has resulted in significant bequests and grants, securing vital funding for its ongoing sustainability.”
Gherini began his board membership in 1987 and played a crucial role in the acquisition of valuable collections, including the papers of esteemed scholars. As a recognized expert on Santa Cruz Island, he authored two notable books that explore its history, detailing both its geological origins and cultural significance.
In recognition of his enduring contributions, SBMAL has named its exhibit space the Gherini Gallery, commemorating his legacy and emphasizing the importance of preserving California’s multifaceted history. This recent acknowledgment in the Congressional Record highlights the significance of John Gherini’s work and the ongoing mission of the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library.
“It is through dedicated individuals like John that we ensure our rich history is preserved and accessible for future generations,” stated Jack Clark Robinson, OFM, Executive Director at SBMAL. “We are grateful for his commitment and are thrilled that he has been honored in this way.”
