The City and County hosted a meeting and open house on August 29 to provide an update  on the Olive Mill/Coast Village Road Roundabout Project. Attendees got to speak to experts about the design of both this project and the roundabout project at San Ysidro Road and North Jameson Lane.

That intersection, at Olive Mill and Hot Springs, just cries out for a roundabout. I love them. They work, but not when people don't do them right. It's yield to the left, yes, but also, NEVER stop once you're in one. Do not yield to people entering unless they're butting in in front of you. Or if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. (In which case, just go around again. Simple.) But it's definitely the answer for that particular spot. I can't wait! Hope it happens.

We've driven the roundabouts in France and Italy where there is plenty of room. It is no big deal to get on and off. In Santa Barbara no one knows how to use the roundabouts. The drivers stop or pause making them unusable. The one on Milpas isn't even round, which is the real point of keeping traffic flowing. The one by Vons Montecito is horrible, too many tight turns. Installing another one in Montecito right off the San Ysidro exit wouldn't work., Too many tourists get off there and would have no clue how to navigate the roundabout.

@BEACHSONG Where you here before the Milpas Roundabout errr Ovalabout? That intersection as a complete nightmare with the off ramp traffic sometimes abcking up the freeway. If you cannot negotiate the Hot Springs roundabout, may I suggest taking an Uber or walking: you probably should not be behind the wheel.

Every intersection in this area that has been converted to a roundabout has seen a dramatic reduction in traffic congestion: APS / Montecito/ Syacamore Canyon; Cliff Drive / Las Positas; HotSprings / Old Coast Hwy.

People using the road make mistakes (like running stop signs and red lights), always have and always will. Crashes will always be with us, but they need not result in fatalities or serious injury. Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world - the intersection type with the lowest risk of fatal or serious injury crashes - (much more so than comparable signals). Modern roundabouts require a change in speed and alter the geometry of one of the most dangerous parts of the system - intersections. The reduction in speed and sideswipe geometry mean that, when a crash does happen at a modern roundabout, you usually need a tow truck, not an ambulance. Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts. Roundabouts are one of several proven road safety features (FHWA). The life saved may be your own. https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/provencountermeasures/roundabouts/ https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/intersection/innovative/roundabouts/

I always worry when I get to the round about, it seems no one knows what yield means. How about red and green arrows, on that picticular area, no one knows who’s on first!

One real obvious problem with the roundabout at Hot Springs Rd. is regarding the entrance from Old Coast Highway from the Santa Barbara side.. It is a TWO LANE roundabout, BUT, the entrance to it is so narrowed via a planter island in the middle of the road, that it forces all vehicles into SINGLE FILE right where the road opens up to TWO Lanes to access the roundabout entrance. This essentially blocks vehicles from entering this second lane with access to the inside lane of the roundabout, and causes a backup that extends for over a 100 yards, and causes this roundabout to be very inefficient. I hope they spend a little more time on the design to try to make all future roundabouts as efficient and open as possible, if not it just becomes a huge fubar and just makes this worse.
