The San Luis Obispo County community is rallying behind the family of David de Castro, a California Department of Corrections officer who has been in a coma since he was found unresponsive at his home on October 31, 2025.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his medical recovery.
To assist the family, a GoFundMe campaign was created by his colleague Melissa Holder, who has worked with de Castro since the start of his career. The fundraiser, organized on behalf of the de Castro family, aims to raise $17,500 for medical expenses, treatments, and related costs.
“David has dedicated 18 years of service to the California Department of Corrections, where he has been known for his commitment and professionalism. Beyond his career, David is cherished as a son, father, friend, and confidant to those around him,” Michelle Bethune, the officer’s sister stated in the fundraiser page.
So far, the fundraiser has collected more than $16,500, according to the GoFundMe page. Bethune said the unexpected medical crisis has deeply affected and challenged the family.
Friends and coworkers describe de Castro as kind, compassionate, and loyal, someone always willing to go the extra mile to help others.
“Our family is truly humbled by the support shown by David’s colleagues at the California Men’s Colony (CMC), as well as his childhood friends from afar who have visited him in the hospital over the past several days,” Bethune noted on the GoFundMe page.
The de Castro family is inviting the public to contribute to the GoFundMe campaign and share David’s story to help raise awareness.
“Any donations received will go directly toward covering David’s medical expenses, treatments, bills, and related costs. Your generosity and support mean the world to our family. We thank you sincerely for standing by us during this difficult time,” the de Castro family stated.
Donations for Officer de Castro’s recovery can be made through the official GoFundMe page.
