On Monday, April 9th at 5:30 p.m. Santa Barbara City Councilmember Eric Friedman is hosting a community meeting to discuss the new Target that will be opening at the former Galleria building on the corner of State Street and La Cumbre Road.  The meeting will be in the Hope School Auditorium, 3970 La Colina Road, and will include staff presentations from City of Santa Barbara Community Development and Public Works Departments as well Target Senior Development Manager, John Dewes.

The purpose of this community meeting is to clarify the permitting process, discuss potential effects to traffic and circulation in the area and proposed improvements, and learn about the plans Target has for this location.  There will also be a question and answer session for members of the public.

“This is an opportunity for area residents to interact directly with City Staff and a Target representative to better understand the permitting process, traffic and circulation issues and the long-term vision for this location” said Councilmember Friedman.  “I look forward to this information being shared with members of the public as well as receiving feedback and questions regarding this project.”

I envision an opportunity for someone to market super jumbo panniers so Target shoppers can put large, bulky items on their bikes akin to the Portlandia episode: Bicycle Movers.

Why would you be allowed to park at La Cumbre Plaza Shopping Center? I don’t think the two properties are owned by the same company. Would you be allowed to park a O'Reilly Auto Parts but go next door? Parking near Macy’s can already be impacted from Lure, Chipotle, Winehound, and other shops who pay their rent.

Always running I was thinking that too. I almost feel bad for those nearby parking lots as they will end up being used for target. We share a lot with a couple of other business and parking is limited so if you park in our lot and are not doing business with any of the paying tenants we can and do tow cars away.

Parking is not going to be a problem at all. There are currently around 70-86 spaces at that location, plus nearly an unlimited amount at the La Cumbre shopping mall. The entire lot on the State St. side of Macy's is usually completely empty. It's like saying that Earth Day in Santa Barbara needs to be canceled because there's "no parking." Think about getting out of your EF car, and taking the bus for once in your lives peeps.

"Take a bus" to target? Haha! Yeah, and just drag your new flat screen / patio table / kids' bmx bike, etc on to the bus? People go to Target to buy big items usually. Have you ever been to one? This isn't a corner grocery store where you are just shopping for a meal for one. Way to be an anti-car shill though.

There's no parking issue because it's been agreed by committee that all Target shoppers are going to ride their bikes or take the bus to the store.

Forget the Traffic. Where the hell are that many cars going to park. They should knock down the Marc (LoL) and make a parking structure. No one can afford living there at the Marc. We need a Taget [Pronounced](Tarje). LoL

Parking will be the weak link. My accountant used to have office space in that building, and parking was difficult even for that. I just don't see how that facility can accommodate the cars. If the lot fills up then people will be waiting on both State and La Cumbre to enter the lot.

That this location for a Target is even going to be discussed by our city government astounds me. It will be a traffic nightmare.

You elected city council that wants to generate city retail sales taxes, anyway they can. Next time elect a city council that chooses to balance the city budget by cutting expenses instead.

Traffic is already really bad in that area, they may as well just make it like the Arc de Triomphe roundabout. What happened to all the people that were going get out of their cars and ride bikes? That was a dud just like the Marc was supposed to be “affordable”.

The Marc was supposed to be small, dense and offer limited parking. If there is a market for those qualities, then they are affordable for those who rent them. Do you in fact mean "subsidized", when you ask for "affordable" units?

"potential effects to traffic and circulation in the area": euphemism for good luck driving anywhere near this intersection or in the area nearby after this general merchandise Big Box store goes in. "We need a Target" clamorers, you will finally get your wish.

Think of the business a Target at the Sears location would bring to the mall! It could be a veritable Renaissance for the retailers there.
