Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Vitalant and Earl Warren Showgrounds to host a blood drive at Earl’s Place at the Showgrounds on Wednesday, September 30 from 12:00pm- 5:00pm. Appointments are requested to help maintain social distancing. Schedule yours today at using the sponsor code 1493 or Link to signup to donate. You may also register by phone at 805-542-8500.

Every week, Vitalant must collect about 350 blood donations at blood drives to meet the needs of our community. We invite all eligible individuals to join us in supporting this vital work. Additionally, Vitalant currently tests successful donations for COVID-19 antibodies to help find donors who could help COVID-19 patients by donating convalescent plasma. Learn more at

Donors should bring a photo I.D, eat well and drink plenty of water prior to donating blood. Donors must be 16 years old and there is no upper age limit. 16 year olds must bring a signed Vitalant parental consent form found online at Eligibility Questions? Please call 877-258-4825.

To ensure everyone’s safety in these trying times, Vitalant requires all donors to wear a face covering while in our facility. One-way valve masks are prohibited. Please bring your own cloth-based face covering in order to donate blood. We understand that some individuals may not be able to wear a face covering and ask that you postpone your donation until we no longer have this safety requirement.

Of course we need blood donations, but Vitalant is a really large corporation that makes a ton of money from each donation. I think the last data I saw was that they could make about $600 from each donated pint. They call themselves a non-profit but that only means that they have to spend all of the money they makes each year so they typically pay the CEOs and top staff really high salaries. This is the kind of story that you would see if we actually had a functioning newspaper in our town.

I have been under the impression that for the last few years, Vitalant is the only company handling blood drives locally. Am I mistaken, and do you know of another organization that you find more palatable?

Google says: Do blood drives sell your blood?
Yes. All the centers that supply blood for transfusions—whether they're part of the American Red Cross or not—sell their products to cover operating expenses. ... (Most blood banks also mark up a few percent extra so they can keep a little cash on hand.) The exact price of a unit of blood varies from place to place. RC's 2019 report states they got $1.74 billion from selling blood. Most of this money is spent on their operating expenses which would include high salaries for their execs. This huge business all starts with your free donation, or maybe you got a coupon for an ice cream cone for it.
